Time once again to get at the newsletter. With football season and Christmas activities far in the past, the news seems a bit more sparse than usual, but I was very glad to receive some long letters with news of '58's which I'll pass along below.
Ted Harris writes to say he and Mary Ann and son Edward III (Ned), who is a year old, are living in Belmont, Mass. Having completed Harvard Medical School, Ted is now an intern in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he intends to remain for his assistant residency in medicine. He says, "Bill Smith, newly married, is living in our old place in Boston and barrels through Boston University Medical School as well as he used to take those slalom gates." The Harris's see Dave and Peg Harwood and son "Had" occasionally. Dave is doing "part teaching, part learning as he pushes on toward his Ph.D. in geology at Harvard." Ted goes on, "John and AnnGraf and son Ted have settled into the comfortable life of the town lawyer and upland game hunter . . . he's in a big Concord, N. H., law firm and lives in a lovely country house nearby." Harrises have also seen Boband Leslie Abbott, "Church" and Julie Pew, and Al Abeson.
Lowell W. Wilder writes that he is presently an intern at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and will begin his residency in surgery next year. He informs us that "Bradley Smith Wilder was born on Nov. 25, 1962, and it appears that Bob Blackman may have a large fullback by 1980." The Wilders have seen much of Dickand Jean Fries who are also in Pittsburgh and have a daughter Sally and a second on the way. They have also been visited by BobRudolph who is interning at the University of Pennsylvania and plans to be a medical resident at the University of Michigan next year.
After having received a letter from BobPortland last month, I was glad to hear from Dick Portland more recently, with news of a few more 'sB's. Dick is keeping busy as a member of the Rochester Football Officials Association and is working high school games in the area. He says, "DonModay is living on Long Island while commuting to New York City. He represents Alcoa in one of its marketing phases. 'The Modes' is fighting off the sweet young things who are vying for the top spot." Dick also reports that Mel and Sandy Wellstead and their two children are living in St. Louis, where Mel works for Continental Can Co. in an extensive training program.
Larry Kruteck sends news of some '58's he sees occasionally from his post at Fort Dix. He says, "Jerry Manne is at Camp Kilmer, N. J. I see him often as he is a bench warmer on every athletic team Camp Kilmer has, ranging from ping pong, badminton, horseshoes, Softball, golf, bowling, etc. They're short of personnel at that station and Jerry doesn't mind sitting the bench with all his TDY and opportunity to have a few beers at each NCO Club they visit." Larry tells us that Phil Weinseimmer has been discharged and received the Army Commendation Medal for his outstanding work in the finance section at Fort Dix; Paul Frankel is working in the chief counsel's office, Internal Revenue Service in New York City; Gersh Abraham was called back in the U.S. Air Force for a six-month tour of duty during which he and wife Sally spent a couple months in Europe.
Larry also tells of Bob Pratt, who is working for IBM in White Plains, N. Y. He says it is rumored that Bob is engaged, but who the girl is remains a big secret. As for Larry, he was promoted to captain in December of last year and is presently trial counsel at Fort Dix, prosecuting general court martial cases. His ETS dates come up in September and he is beginning to look for a position somewhere in the New York area.
I received a nice card from Jane and DonVoss telling of the birth of their first child, a girl Cynthia Kirstin, born December 26, 1962. They are living in Montclair, N. J., and Don is with Bell Telephone in New York.
Another card from George and JanetWoleott announced the birth of their baby girl Mary Elizabeth on Nov. 11, 1962 at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where George is a rotating intern, and looking forward to beginning his pediatric residency there in July.
Fred "Skip" Coogin has recently become engaged to Wynn Tice of Chicago. They are planning a March wedding.
