John Bell is enjoying life as much as can be expected, at the Sullivan County Retirement Home in Unity, N.H. He will be 90 on May 21.
The 1905 Alumni Fund is off to an extra good start, as this year we have advance payments of over $2000. With the usual good support of all the boys and girls, we should be able to be among the first three leading classes in the Veterans' group.
A card from Mildred Putnam mailed in Hawaii says she is on an AARP trip for the month of February. A very lucky girl, I say.
Ethel Lillard's brother Ed Hazen of 1918 is shown in a recent Alumni Magazine picture with other Dartmouth men (see page 34 of the January issue.)
A rather sad note has been received from HelenGilbert. She has had a serious operation on her eyes, and so far the results are not very good. We all hope she has an early recovery.
Harold Bond '42 will be our speaker at the February 21 meeting of Sarasota Dartmouth Club. You will remember Mr. Bond's mother as Alice Dickson Bond, a Mt. Holyoke graduate and a dearly loved book reviewer in the New England area.
Professor Bond was one of the early leaders of Dartmouth Alumni College. Jane and I were in the first graduating class of 1968.
Wilbur Bull '09 had lunch with us in early February. He and his new wife Eunice are enjoying life in our warm climate.
"The Trustees of the College are working hard to make sure Dartmouth is able to meet the fund quota of $3,000,000. Two trustees reach retirement age this year, Lloyd Brace '25 and William Buchanan '24. Brace has been our leading financier and will be hard to replace.
A recent gift report of Friends of the Dartmouth Library lists '05 folks. Mrs. E. E. Day, additional gift in memory of her father. Dean Emerson 1888; additional gift from Bill Blatner;Stanley Besse, gift of book in memory of George Liscomb '07; Fred. Chase, an impressive list of many items; C. C. Hills, items of Norwich, Dartmouth, and Vermont interest.
My 90th birthday was celebrated with a party of 26 friends, neighbors and Dartmouth men. Horace Kidger '03, the oldest, 93 in March: Leon Sprague '07, 88 in December; Norman Gordon '23, working on his 50th coming up in June; and your scribe made up the Dartmouth group.
Greeting cards and letters were received from 50 others. All in all, a very happy occasion that will be long remembered.
Your secretary received three letters to remind me of an error in an item in the January magazine, that listed Arthur Lord as Mrs. Scale's son. Of course he is her youngest brother and a very fine gentleman well known to many '05 folks. I phoned him and begged forgiveness.
Before you read these notes we hope to see many Dartmouth men in our beautiful southland.
