MAY 1973 ARTHUR W. HOOVER, JOHN S. CLARK JR.

Well, it's been almost a year since we wined and dined together at our 10th. Just four more years to go before we get to try it again!

John Clarke is doing a bang-up job with the Alumni Fund Drive. Remember, it's tax deductible. John called me last month and reported he had recently seen Dave Evans. Dave is greatly encouraged by the response of letters and cards. Thanks to those who dropped him a line. Incidentally, Bob Blackman wrote Dave a delightful letter from Illinois, where he now guides the football fortunes of that State University. In case you forgot, Dave's address is: c/o Veteran's Hospital West Roxbury, Mass.

John Williams III has been promoted to vice president of marketing, Soflens division of Bausch & Lomb, with new duties including advertising, sales promotion, customer relations, order processing function, and market research. Co-author of technical papers on hydrophilic contact lenses, John will complete his MBA at the University of Rochester this year. He and wife Lucia have two sons Gordon, 5, and Andrew, 3, and live at 290 Aliens Creek Road, Brighton, N.Y.

Frank Milon is making it big in politics, at least in North Pelham, N.Y. Frank was recently elected to a two year term as trustee of that village. It was a Republican landslide, as the mayor-elect (Dartmouth '22) and Frank carried the day. Fortified by an elaborate political expense account, Frank and Barbara journeyed to Greenwich, Conn., to visit Simms and RobertBrowning. That was just a warm up for an upcoming fall vacation in London with a visit to Ernie and Connie Roessler on the schedule.

Every so often I get a letter that both surprises and delights me. The winner this month is MikeMace. Mike left Hanover after his sophomore year, but has managed to stay abreast of what's been going on the last 13 years. After leaving Dartmouth, Mike hooked up with the Sheridan Hotel chain and while we were listening to Arthur Dean in June of '62, Mike was one of the youngest public relations directors in the country. Mike left Sheridan and started up at George Washington University and grabbed off his degree. After graduation he hooked on as an assistant press man for Senator Harrison Williams (D-N.J.). Soon after, he was a news analyst for CBS News, with his headquarters in Chicago. Mike found this job fascinating and also grueling, with deadlines, travel, and the other pressures of this type of work. An unglamorous end to this profession occurred at the Democratic Convention in 1968, when Mike was wounded (by a policeman) and suffered a nervous breakdown, which has been followed by four relapses. Things are looking up, as Mike is now with Telesearch, Inc. as a fund raiser, and finds the position challenging, and more important, finds he can walk away from it each day with a certain peace of mind. Mike, while at Dartmouth, was close to Steve Perkins, and prior to Steve's death was often able to visit with him in Washington. Mike understands that Rick Damiano is now a professor in Upstate New York. The only classmate he has seen lately is BillBrodskey, who still harnesses the law for the Justice Department. Normally I avoid any touches of personal tragedies in the column, but I felt Mike's letter deserved a detailed treatment. Perhaps it's the Dartmouth experience that prompted him to say he would love to hear from other members of the Class "as in looking back over the years I prize my friends at Dartmouth more and more." So send a note on to Mike at Apt. C 1608, 1600 S. Joice St., Arlington, Va. 22202.

Just a reminder that some of us held off pretty well. But Al Cantrel is now headed toward marital bliss with Susan Bradford Davis who has a very interesting career background in politics. Al, armed with his Ph.D. in political science, has also been active in politics. He was on Lyndon Johnson's Whitehouse Staff and also served in the Department of State, the Bureau of the Budget, and the National Academy of Business. Presently Al is an independent consultant in political and social research in Washington.

That's it for another month. Help support John's great efforts and donate to the Alumni Fund!
