As of this writing, we're all feeling a little bit of the fresh air that is coming out of Washington. President Ford said it all in his first nationally televised speech to the joint session of Congress: "Let's get on with it." That very much expresses the way Mike Hurd, Tippy Blake and I feel about our class and its future activities. What's behind us is done! The Reunion appears to have put some fresh air into the Class.
One word about past performances: Dick Hoehn (head class agent) and Randy Malta (renuion giving chairman), with the assistance of many other class agents, were able to raise almost $52,000. That's over twice as much as last year! That's a tremendous credit to their leadership ability and the renewed interest that the Class is showing toward the school. Now, if we can get Malin to straighten out some of American Airlines' problems!
News from across the country: Dick and Norma Forster send sunny regards from the University of Miami School of Medicine where pick is an assistant professor of ophthalmology. For those of you who may have been in Hanover last month, you would have seen them there with three children. We understand that Dick is still trying to teach the kids exactly what he is a professor of ...!
We've heard from Phoebe Shaw (Harry's wife) as well as from the Huffman Manufacturing Company. Both pass along the marvelous news that Harry has been elected vice president, marketing services. Harry likes the idea because now he gets free bicycles, lawn mowers, and car equipment that will keep Phoebe and the three little ones very happy! By the way, Harry, if you need a phenomenal advertising agency, Dayton is only a phone call away from New York!! (This kid'll never stop selling!)
From across the river in Newark, N.J., the Celanese Plastics Company has convinced George Powell to move all the way from Minnesota to become vice president, planning. We are told that his responsibilities include "the development of strategic growth plans ..." George, please call Mike Hurd. He needs your help!
Here's a piece of news which deserves our special attention although I'm sure it has not been given much publicity. For the past three years, Larry Toal, while working for Chase Manhattan Bank, has been extremely instrumental in awarding tribes of Alaskan Indians $962,000,000 for land that the United States had taken control of over 100 years ago. Back in 1971, Larry was the bank's vice president of economic development division. At that time, he was named as a member of the Financial Advisory Committee of Tlingit and Haida Indians of Alaska. Now, he is also a member of an advisory group created to administer funds that are being distributed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Larry says, "We wanted to get involved in solving the problems of American Indians. We felt we could help the Tlingit and Haida and gain a better understanding of the unique economic development problems of the American Indian that might be applied to relationships with other tribes in the future." We should applaud Larry's efforts in this area, since it is so much in the Dartmouth tradition. His work is obviously being recognized by the bank, in that he is now vice president in charge of Chase's Institutional Banking's Government Division.
That about covers it for now. Both Mike and I will be in close contact through our newsletter to fill you in on details of upcoming plans and the like. As we expressed at the Reunion, we are most interested in helping organize our class in a meaningful way - one which will have value to everyone who wants to participate. We are dedicated to having a ball and sharing good times.
