Welcome aboard "73s -
Having whole-heartedly weathered the winter holiday rush, I am once again prepare to indulge ... in writing, seeking info, slandering drinking, and most of all. living it up for a while. The New Year brings to each and every one of us the opportunity, as John Kemeny would say, to examine our consciences and to dissect from that scrutiny a meaningfulness to the everyday life we see around us. The past lour years have oh so much expanded my understanding of the things that tick before us. And I am quite certain that the future has a lot in store for us all in many wonderful ways. So, as the new year 1974 unfurls, may I extend to you all a very warm “Ahoy There!," and may my mail box pucker-up with all sorts of delicious hot items from your warm ovens.
What could be more appropriate, then, to the beginning of a new calendar than the following “Bait and Tackle" specials: John Boyle recently married Virginia E. Jenkins in New London, N.H. Bill Hatch, our correspondent on the spot, was head usher, while Charlie Fowlerserved as best man. Charlie took two years leave from Dartmouth and plans to graduate in '75. Ginger graduated from the Skids. The Boyles are now living in Lebanon as John is attending Thayer School.
Likewise joining the rostrum of holy wedlock was Manly Kanoa Jr. to Delphine Yuen of Hawaii in the presence of some 900 relatives and friends. Dartmouth's "mainland" representation included the Boyles, Bill Hatch, and Brian McCoy. The Kanoas are now on the West Coast in Portland where Manly is attending law school at Lewis and Clark.
Not to be outdone by Dave Bracken, PaulFeakins recently walked the plank as well when he officially joined hands with Ann Butterworth, a Big Green exchange student from Smith. PhilMyers and John Weatherly (sounds yachtish, doesn't it?) served as ushers, while Jon Low,Wayne Davis, John Harrington, and Bob Weil all managed to embarrass the poor chap by being quietly escorted ex civitate via the New Jersey Slate Police. All I can say is that if you guys were on board my vessel, it'd be below deck the rest of the way for you! Since that time, Paul and his wife have transplanted themselves to New Orleans where he is a teacher/coach at Metairie Park Country Day School. Phil, meantime, is attempting to outshine Marcus Welby at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Weatherly's spending his time in Maine as a finishing carpenter on sailboats (now, that's my kind of guy!), while Bob Weil maintains a banking position in New York.
Frank Grove, now a member of the drama department faculty at the University of Rhode Island, also recently married Rosemary (Maggie) Blackmon, once assistant curator of the theatre collection at the Museum of the City of New York.
New Year's bits and pieces to ponder, thanks to a competent Mark Harty: Dave Smile co-owns a Tech Hi-Fi franchise in Columbus, Ohio ... George Kidder is an admissions officer/instructor/coach at St. Mark's School (I wonder if he earns three times the salary?) ... Bruce Ling is a college rep for Aetna Life on the Hanover Plain and enjoys every minute of it ... "Blondie" Pete Smith is catching the coeds' eyes and, thus, promoting good business as a bartender, waiter at the Bull's Eye in Hanover. He's also trying to substitute teach ... KevinO'Shea is a football coach and substitute teacher in Rye, N.Y. ... Dick Hetke plays Dartmouth's version of "Paper Chase" at Harvard Law ... Brad Little, whose father (Class of '46) recently passed away, is a super salesman for Executone, Inc., working out of Hanover ... Dave "Jet" Nichols is head bartender at the Hanover Inn, while Mike Neary now has full control over the new Tavern Room, and plays the role of assistant manager ... Charlie Boarman entertains US Senator Pell of Maryland in the nation's capitol ... Doug Bate received a mini-computer calculator for Christmas to ac- company him to class at the Wharton School of Finance.
Phil Maloney and Bob Norton seem to be making the grades at Dartmouth's Med School ... Bruce Curran has become the first recipient of a new scholarship at the Thayer School ... and last, but not least, this short item: DaveClark, Dartmouth's Bobby Riggs, is a student of sorts in Hanover. Drop me a line, sometime, Dave.
There you have it, mates. Another month. Another year. Don't let 1974 slip by without jotting a word or two down on a piece of paper and forwarding it to me. Me and my wit are always available for laughs. And remember: "The first hour of the morning is the rudder of the day." That's all for news that's fit to print. Until next month ... Anchors away!
