One interesting thing about writing class notes is that you have forgotten what you have written by the time they come out in print, and everything has happened anyway. So by the time you read these lines, the football season will be over, a cheery Merry Christmas to you all will be the order of the day, and we can look forward to spring.
Right now, football is in full swing. We enjoyed being present at the victories over Holy Cross and Pennsylvania. Arch Earle, KarlStillman, George Clark, Len Read, Vic Smith and Dick Holbrook were also at the Hanover opener. Your secretary was apparently the lone '17er at the Penn game. Amos Blandin '18 and Stumpy Barr '18 shared wet and neighborly seats. "The band was great." (We quote Amos.) The girl cheerleaders, standing on the shoulders of their male counterparts, taught us how to spell D-A-R-T-M-O-U-T-H and proved that they could accomplish aerial somersaults without dampening their regalia.
The governing body of 1917 held its meeting on October 3 at the Hanover Inn. Nine out of 12 - a goodly percentage - made the effort to attend. Bob Scott presided. Our popular chairman is sharing the duties of bequest chairman with Bob Kaiser of the college staff. From now on, you will receive material relating to bequests and income trusts prepared by the College but signed by President Scott. An hour of business included a financial report from Vic Smith who stated that the Class is still solvent with 69 members responding to the call for current class dues. Len Reade was acclaimed for attaining the top spot in our division of the Alumni Fund for 1975. Arch Earle stated that the current issue of the Sentry will be in the mail shortly. At RalphSanborn's suggestion, the advisability of concentrating "on the Post-50th reunions was discussed. The meeting concluded with remarks from WaltWalters on the ROTC situation. Walt has worked hard for reinstatement of this project.
On October 4, we joined members of the Class of 1918 in a dinner in the Drake Room. George Stoddard '18 helped make the arrangements and 1917 came up with a piano. Arch Earle again proved his ability as an entertainer by lining up and playing for a versatile quartet including Bob Scott, Barney Thielscher,Sandy Lynch and Vic Smith.
Alden Vaughn, now a resident of Hanover, represented '17 on Dartmouth Night, October 10. Passengers on Air New England that evening remarked on the distinct visibility of the bonfire on the campus, from above, but were unable to spot Alden carrying the torch in the parade for our illustrious class.
Merry Christmas!
