A news story and picture in the Elgin, Ill., Courier-News last month reported the election of Fran Reilly to a vice presidency of Katy Industries. Fran joined that company in 1973 as treasurer following association with B. F. Goodrich as vice president and treasurer. He has also held executive positions in the legal department of Wilson & Co. since moving to the Midwest from private law practice in Massachusetts. It's a pleasure to read the name of Dartmouth in connection with Fran's business achievements.
One of the many good things that is happening at Dartmouth is described in fine letter from Ted Thorne. Ted writes in part as follows:
"For the benefit of '38s who may visit Hanover, I believe I should give you a report on the new Saturday Seminars. I was predisposed toward the initial seminar - on science - because I had done secret work in the space program, 'way back, and am working on a book on the subject. But everyone else got as much out of it as 1 did, and that was a lot ... . When the talk session ended and we left 105 Dartmouth for lunch at the Inn, the applause sounded like the cheering at a football game. It sounds slightly weird, but at the convivial Inn lunch there was a glowing mix of martinis and pondering over how gravity works. Subsequent seminars took up art, business, and politics.
"With Gil Tanis's Dartmouth Institute so successful, Alumni College now so well established, and the new Saturday Seminars providing actual cheering, the shape of things to come in Hanover seems to be a mix of the regular student body and intermittent students as ancient as '38s. It's a pretty rich Renaissance in Hanover, and good fun."
Another opportunity for alumni participation - in this case in the decision-making of the College - is provided by the nomination of a College Trustee from the membership of the Alumni Council. Petitions for Bill King '63 have been in the mail. I know that some of you have signed them. I hope that many of you have.
The deep sympathy of the Class is extended to the family of Red Wurster, whose tragic death is reported elsewhere in this issue.
A letter from our conscientious treasurer Gus Southworth was recently received: they are always welcome. Gus kindly enclosed a few notes and comments which some of you had equally kindly included with your dues payments. For instance: from Pres Downer: "Greatest experience I've had after bitching about the 'Native American' minority doing away with Indian symbol plus coeds at Dartmouth was interviewing a candidate for the Class of '79 who turned out to be a gorgeous 17 year-old Indian gal. Toucheé!" Touche indeed, Pres, and a good story well told. Marsh says it was the driveway, where he landed. (Ref. last month's notes.) John Adams says, "It was nice seeing you and other classmates at the Reunion. Also it was nice getting a chance to play on the Dartmouth squash courts for the first time in my life. Even though I lost a close 3-2 match to Fred Pickering, I have some consolation in the fact that I lost to one of the top players, in our class. Durward Brandis, deceased member of our class, has two sons living in the Hanover area. One of them attended Dartmouth and is living and teaching in the Plainfield, N.H., area. The other boy is working at the Gulf Service station in Hanover. Julius Westheimer '38 can be seen frequently live on T-V at 8:30 P.M. Eastern Time on Channel Two in our area. This program goes throughout the country. Julius is seen on about 50% of these programs."
Al Hastings says "Pleasant Fall... not much business activities." That could be construed as a non sequitor ... or as a sequitor.
In addition to conveying the above observations, receipt of which the class secretary greatly appreciates, Gus regretfully reported that as of February 17 this year's dues campaign trailed the record of a year ago. He says, "The second mailing has been out for a month, and no more than a dozen responses have been returned. The totals for approximately the same time span 1973-74 were 341 as opposed to 315 for 1974-5." As has been frequently pointed out, and with good reason, '38 is amazing. Our class Alumni Fund dollar total last year was. Let's make our class dues participation this year likewise.
