Hear 'Ye '73s -

At the time of this writing (early October) plans for the Class' first mini-reunion are full-speed ahead with an estimated head count of some 120 mates. If all goes as planned, not a bad turn out for three years of total toil in the "real world." Details of the October 16 gala event will not appear until December's ALUMNI MAGAZINE, and the late-fall publication of the Class Newsletter.

The news of the month concerns one Bruce Foster, one Andy Caffrey, and one Paul Sehl in a local bar/restaurant establishment of interstellar fame, Matey's or Sail Loft, Marblehead (Mass.), where "through these portals pass the most beautiful women in the world." With pen in hand the Captain charted many a course on the whereabouts of several class members between sips of quenching Cape Codders and flaming red lobster. (Let it be known that by evening's end it was agreed by all that class news is harder to obtain via an 11-cent postcard than by way of a $50 check!) Nonetheless, a worn-out cocktail napkin has it that Bruce and "P.T." are making it big with IBM in the Boston area, while Andy (having just run into Chuck Thomas at Temple Med) is practicing pre-law for a Boston firm. Bruce and wife Pam are living in Somerville. Andy, Paul, and John Elias, now in his second year at Harvard Law, are all roomies. Seems John has picked up some strange disease while traveling throughout the Mid East this summer, so reports Andy, for his drinking habits have refined to .0, while the work load has increased two-fold. Unable to attend the mini-get together was John Stinebaugh, also employed as a sales representative for IBM, and who like his colleagues is formulating big plans for the future.

Listed among the Most Likely to Pass the Bar Exam this fall are notables: "8.J." Jones (Case Western), Jack "Zed" Zouhary (Univ. of Toledo), Joe Rideout (Univ. of Virginia, seeking Ohio certification), Bob Glovsky (Boston College), Bob Rossi (Boston College), and BillFitzharris (Boston University, seeking Washington state certification). On May 30, Bill married Marsha Jean Pechman (Cornell '73) in Boston's Arboretum. In attendance were Steve Gillingham as best man and Mitch Kurz as himself. Ed Friedman showed up a week late; but at least he showed up! Bill and Marsha are presently living in the Seattle area where each is working full-time as legal advisors of some sort for the municipality.

While we're on the subject of matrimony, seems as though the wedding bells never cease. Scheduled to holy wedlock this month is ToddJohnston to H.T.H. Diane Champion (Newton College of the Sacred Heart) in Wethersfield, Conn. Add to the list Doug Bate who is presently engaged to a former DOC Ski-School woman of reknown, Annie, and saving all he can for the big event as a market analyst for Gillette. Seems Don Pavelka, among the likes of BillGallagher, Steve Bolster, and a gathering of '72s and '74s, just could no longer resist the temptations of married life, and succumbed to holy matrimony on June 12th to Kim Bishop of Columbus, Ohio. If what I hear holds water, Don is presently with American Hospital Supply after spending two years at University of Virginia Business School, while Bill's underscoring management with IBM in Chicago, and Steve's attending grad school (voice and music) at the University of North Carolina.

Newlyweds include: "T.D." Dewland (hard to believe!) in Virginia, Bob Fisken to Patty Butler (Beloit College '73) at Rollins Chapel, and now residing in Vershire, Vt., and Wayne Whippen to Ellen McIver (Lesley College) in Wayland, Mass.

Postscript to above announcements: a random count of representative classmates show some 25 per cent of them are married. At that rate, the entire Class will be water-logged by the second reunion!

Yale Divinity School student Bob Bachelder recently made his first appearance in the pulpit at Central Congregational Church in Attleboro Falls (Mass.) where his father is minister. Apparently, Bob served this summer as a student minister in addition to helping plan youth activities and visiting local hospitals.

Dateline: Bob Manis has enrolled at American Graduate School of International Management in Arizona, the only school in the U.S. devoted exclusively to training men and women for international careers. Since the school's founding in 1946, over 9300 students have been trained in a unique tri-partite curriculum of international studies, modern languages, and world business.

Dateline: June 13, Mark Ayers graduated from Miami University (Ohio) as a master of science; June 29, Mitch Kroner graduated from Villanova Law with a J.D.

Two short notes before I bid adieu. One: I am of the personal opinion that the Green Derby Group VIII class rating system for the Alumni Fund is a complete farce! It seems terribly unreasonable that a Class which earns well over $5,000 more than its competing class (with only two percentage points lower in participation - an index figure erroneously conceived of in the first place) only ends up in second place. I am very much taken aback by the fact that we stand as a runner-up, when in actuality the Class deserves much more credit. If not apparent from the College, let it be resounded throughout the hallowed halls of Dartmouth, BRAVO '73s! For a job well-done!

Once again, the Captain wishes to relay his perennial distress call for your help. Column news is what you make it. Without your assistance, the good ship Little Current has little wind to shimper its timbers. Please ... please keep us all informed of your past, present, and future. Who knows? Maybe it'll help you!

That's all for news that's fit to print. May the November tides be always at your back.

Cheers ...
