If winter comes, can spring be far behind, and March is at least the start of spring! So these notes will start with an interesting and nostalgic comment, inspired by an ad in the Daily Dartmouth of March 4, 1924, which is headed by the cheerful exhortation - "Cheerio Slush," From this beginning it goes on to offer a trip to Bermuda, including transportation, food, lodging, and side trips in Bermuda, with a price tag of $119 and concluding with the advice to "eat, drink and be merry." It certainly should be possible to be merry at that price, Maybe some classmate can give a first hand report.
Notes have been received from several classmates reporting on their travels and other activities. The Wheatleys have intentions of visiting both Florida and Arizona, where they will join temporarily the '24 Green Valley delegation. And speaking of Arizona, a note has come to me by way of Sam Lamson's desk, from Walt Larkin, who lives in Phoenix, now happily and comfortably retired from his practice as an ophthalmologist. The 40 Year Book makes the comment that he "got smart in 1944 by going from Philadelphia to Phoenix."
And coming back east, a recent letter from Putty Blodgett - interesting as always - reports on a hospital stay recently caused by an attack of the gout. No, it was not due to the traditional reason. Charlotte is recovering from a hip operation. And their son Putnam '53 is very active in cross-country skiing. It's not surprising that a Blodgett can travel 50 miles a day or more. Put used to cover quite a lot of territory in his younger days.
Ev Lyon reports on his travels in the Baltic, including the fact that he and Pete Wheatley were shipmates on the "Viking Sea."
The Stan Chitticks are about to embark on a trip to include Egypt and Morocco, another continuation of their world-wide travels.
The Leonard Rautenbergs, following the lead of many others, are now enjoying the simpler life of apartment living in Tonawanda, N.Y.
Larry Treat, subject of an article in the March 1975 issue of the Magazine telling of his career as a writer of mysteries and short stories, has been elected president of the Mystery Writers of America.
Ed Howe, who winters in Palm Beach, and says he may stay there permanently, comments that he had to give up his yearly trip to Hongkong which he has made for 37 years. Can anyone beat that record?
There are two items your secretary would like to record in this column: 1) Fifty year wedding anniversaries and 2) the birth of greatgrandchildren. Both of these items indicate that we are getting on - but, so what? How about standing up to be counted.
We regret to report the death of three classmates: Harold Arthur (Barney) Oldfield on August 30, 1975; Willard Cleveland (Cleve) Poole Jr. on January 15, 1976; Timothy Lyons Jr. on January 18, 1976.
