G. Warren "Chief" Wheeler is still very much in business at Wheeler's Motel, 602 Poinsettia Ave., Clearwater Beach, Fla. He is hoping to see some of you 1912'ers who are fortunate enough to get to Florida this winter.
Thanks to "Chief" and the Clearwater Sun of Thursday, Jan. 1, '59, we have the following news item, - "Tarpon City Clerk Retires" -"Jerome W. "Abe" Lincoln retired as city clerk of Tarpon Springs Dec. 31 after serving in that office for the past 11½ years. He was given a farewell party by his office staff who presented him with a farewell gift and wished him a happy retirement." Good luck "Abe" and let's hear from you.
Speeding home from South Jersey one evening this winter Randy Burns pulled into 612 Embree Crescent completely lost in the heart of Westfield, N. J. We not only had a most enjoyable evening but learned that Randy was planning a fishing trip off the Florida Keys for this March and insisted on getting in a round or two of golf so we are all signed up and looking for two more "tired" Floridians.
Merton H. "Mert" Baker is still doing the buying for the Fuller Brush Company of Hartford, Conn., and keeps in the pink playing golf on weekends. He spent three weeks in South America and another three weeks in Southern Europe this past year on two enjoyable trips out of the country. His son Frank has completed two years in the Yale Medical School and is well on his way to becoming an M.D.
We have "Mert" to thank for a clipping from the editorial section of the Hartford, Conn., Courant - "Hartford's Medical Society has a new President." -
It's pleasant news to hear that Dr. Stanley B. Weld has taken over the presidency of the Hartford Medical Society. Dr. Weld is better known than some physicians because from 1936 until the recent past he was editor of the Connecticut State Medical Journal. On top of this from 1949-52 Dr. Weld headed the medical and surgical staff at Hartford Hospital. He is one of a small army of trained and devoted men who help to make this a good community in which to live and bring up our families. We salute him and his colleagues on his assumption of the presidency of the Hartford Medical Society.
Jan. 31 Harold B. Belcher retired after 33 years' service as Treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for National and Foreign Missions whose home office is in Boston, Mass. He has been connected with the Board both here and in China since graduation and his many years' service as treasurer has been highly regarded by all his colleagues. At the January meeting of the Congregational Laymen's Lunch Club in Boston Harold was the guest speaker and told them about the many changes which have taken place in the work of the Board both here and in the foreign field during his period of service.
On Jan. 9 His Holiness Pope John XXIII conferred Knighthood upon Professor RoyJ. Deferrari, Secretary General of Catholic University of America and Board Chairman of Dumbarton College. It was announced from the Vatican in Rome that Roy had been designated to be a Knight of the Order of Saint Sylvester as a mark of distinction in recognition of his life time record of publications and work in Catholic education. Congratulations, Roy, from all your classmates for such distinguished recognition of your life's work.
Mark W. Reed, playwright, received additional recognition from the University of Maine whose Player's award-winning production of Mark's play "Petticoat Fever" left Jan. 3 with a cast of 12 on a seven weeks' tour of Europe and Africa. The sponsors were U.S.O. Shows Inc., U. S. Defense Department and the American Educational Theatre Association.
Fletcher Clark Jr. has not only been reelected Moderator of the Town of Middleborough, Mass., once again but in December was also elected President of the Massachusetts Moderators Association which in itself is due recognition of the many years of service and experience to Fletcher's credit in community leadership.
Judge Jim Griffin of Newmarket, N. H., has been recovering from two major operations which delayed his dismissal from the hospital from Sept. 6 to Nov. 10. As Jim says, "I'm hoping to gather enough strength to be at that 47th intermediate reunion in June of '59; I've been close enough to the maker to realize it's time to gather in all the get-togethers we can."
Confirmation has been received that General Conrad E. Snow was elected this fall a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from Gilmanton Iron Works thus returning Connie to the legislative body in which he served during his earlier residence in Rochester many years ago. Congratulations, Connie.
Elizabeth and Jack Park finally caught up with 1912's "Official" 45th Reunion which they had to miss last June when they called on Eva (Mrs. Dick) Plumer and saw all of her snapshots and heard her enthusiatic story of that get-together. For all 1912'ers passing thru Tack's address is ass Anderson St., Apt. 2, Orlando, Fla.
