I trust this finds everyone well and happy, following a nice summer! Now, take a look into the mirror and recognize that despite the hardy, youthful appearance reflected there, ten years ago today, you were wrapping up your last fall term at Dartmouth. The time is drawing near to return and partake in a reunion of your friends and classmates.
I am delighted to report that Jim "Tonks"Tonkovich has accepted the challenge of being chairman of our 10th in addition to carrying out his duties (as of this past June) as associate to the secretary of the College. As an associate, his responsibilities are numerous and include working closely with alumni, assisting in the jobdevelopment and career-advancement program operated by alumni for undergraduates, and assisting in the organization and activities of the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
Since graduation from the College, Jim received an M.S. in radio, film, and television arts from Syracuse (1970), then returned to the Green to become assistant business manager and the operations director of the Hopkins Center. He returns to Dartmouth from his most recent involvement as part of the management of Shopping International in Norwich, Vt. Jim is married to an actress, the former Wendy Tetley from Portland, Maine. The two met at the Theater-by-the-Sea in Portsmouth, N.H., where Wendy was acting and Jim was technical director. Wendy's professional credits include a part in the TV series "Love of Life" and she has appeared frequently in productions at the Hop and NCCT in the Upper Valley. Now, despite the capabilities of this dynamic duo, the 10th reunion is a massive job to run and must be a team effort!
Plenty of volunteer assistance will be needed and I urge you, particularly if located in New England or on the East Coast, to pick up the phone today, call Jim (603-646-3200) and pledge your assistance in planning this fine event. An informal fall reunion will be held in conjunction with the Cornell game on 22 October... hope many of you can make it!
Onward! Bill and Candace Rapf and sixmonth-old son Kevin are in Amherst, N.H., where Bill is chairman of the Art Department at Milford senior high school while enrolled in a doctoral program in educational media and technology at B.U. In his spare time, Bill is "the Amherst potter" and raises bees! Bill Ferrier, a tax auditor with the IRS, is gathering material for a basic reconstruction of the U.S. tax system to make it as "equitable, efficient, and simple as possible." He has the ear of Congressman Pete McCloskey, and would be interested in hearing from classmates regarding opinions and suggestions on tax reform or problems they have had with the IRS or any other tax-related entity. Address: 5360 Cedar Grove Circle, San Jose, Calif. 95123.
Dave and Tina King, along with daughter Rachel, are now in Chestnut Hill, Mass. After practicing law for two years with a firm in Cleveland, Dave decided he'd prefer to teach, returned for a master of law degree at Harvard, and by now is an active member of the faculty at Suffolk Law School in Boston. New Hampshire Supreme Court Clerk Jim Kazan has been named an associate editor of the New Hampshire Law Weekly, for which he will prepare summaries of state supreme, superior, and district and Federal district court cases (that's a lot of work, James). Jim is a former clerk to the Federal Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and graduated "with high distinction" from the lowa College of Law. In May, RodPease received his doctor of osteopathy degree from Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth. Where will you be practicing, Rod?
Dave Smith is County Executive Alfred DelBello's new assistant for intergovernmental relations (White Plains, N.Y.). Dave had been executive assistant to the county executive of Orange County since 1971 and holds a master's degree in public administration from New York University. Dave is also a former U.S. Marine Corps officer who saw Vietnam service following graduation from Dartmouth. His civic responsibilities and many voluntary activities would require a book to list, indicative of an individual who has become totally involved in the well-being of others and the betterment of his community.
Jerry and Jeannie Murtagh are in Athens, Ga., with son Jason and another child due last month! Jerry is working towards a Ph.D. in political science, Jeannie on a degree in early childhood development. They request news of Ken Dahl. I misplaced Rolf Borgersen in Seattle. He is actually a staff attorney in the Okanogan-Ferry County public defender office in Okanogan, Wash., the north-central part of the state. Rolf sends an "ahoy" to SkipCroninger, his "roomie" in Naval OCS, and reports that he "remains with Diana (roman- tically), single (legally), skiing (occasionally), and still trying to figure it out (optimistically)." That's a hard one to follow, so I bid thee farewell until next month when, among other items, I will relay the ramblings of FrankCouper and cover the activities of MarkWaterhouse. Call Tonks and write me!
