As autumn again bestows flaming beauty on Hanover, Dartmouth begins her 208 th academic year. The Class of 1981, consisting of 1069 freshmen, 762 young men with haircuts and 307 young women with dresses, has matriculated. Fifty-nine years ago the famous Class of 1922, all 393 of us, in that war-torn September of 1918 first scampered on the campus paths, but never on the grass! Now, one can only hope that when the Class of 1981 holds its 55th Reunion in 2056 A.D., it will have been as steadfastly loyal to Dartmouth as 1922 has been all through the years, and especially as it was at its 55th.
And before the reunion memorabilia go into storage, a few additional items shout for recognition.
First, here is an excerpt from a letter written by John Kemeny congratulating Spenny Smith and the 1922 family on its 1977 Alumni Fund accomplishment. John writes, "I am especially proud to be a part of the 1922 family and proud of our extraordinary achievement in breaking the 55th reunion record. Our performance was all the more noteworthy because 1922 was the last of the 'small' classes. You all have my appreciation and that of the College."
Likewise were the Dartmouth College News Service releases on the Alumni Awards presented to Haskell Cohn and Gene Hotchkiss. On Haskell: "A 1922 graduate of Dartmouth,
Mr. Cohn earned an LL.B. degree from Har-of Hale and Dorr in Boston from 1925-33 and was one of the founders of the firm of which he is now the senior partner, Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Glovsky & Popeo. Mr. Cohn is a former president of the Boston Bar Association and a director of the Boston Legal Aid Society. He is also a director of the Boston YMCA. He lives at 91 Seaver Street, Brookline. For his College, Mr. Cohn was president of the Dartmouth Club of Boston, 1954-55, and was a member of the Committee on Equal Opportunity which weighed the College's progress in this field in 1975. From 1931-51, he was chairman of a committee to interview prospective students from the Boston area."
On Gene: "A 1922 graduate of Dartmouth, Mr. Hotchkiss was associated with a succession of investment firms before becoming a partner in Blunt, Ellis & Simmons in 1949. He spent five years with the Norris Grain Company before joining Lee Higginson Company as a salesman from 1927-32. In 1932, he joined Bonner Troxel and Company as a salesman, and in 1934 he joined Blair, Bonner & Company in a similar position. He returned to Lee Higginson in 1942. Mr. Hotchkiss was a trustee and a member of the board of managers of Highland Park Hospital and has served as president of the Community Chest. He is a former secretary and director of the Bond Club of Chicago. For his College, Mr. Hotchkiss served on the Alumni Council - the body which runs the affairs of the College's 36,000 alumni - from 1944-48 and has been bequest chairman for his class since 1956. He was president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Chicago in 1939-40."
Hearty congratulations from all once again to Haskell and Gene.
And lastly, five years ago, shortly before our 50th reunion, Gen. Ike Miller conscripted your naive class scribbler as a rear rank private to accept commands on the joint publication of our 1922 class directory. It was the general's inspiration that, despite the obvious risks involved, we should live dangerously and publish the first name of each wife fortunate enough to be married to a Twoter. Then when the directory was published your innocent scribe was completely disoriented to find on the frontispiece, "There are probably some errors in this directory. Please send any corrections to the Class Secretary." It proved, of course, that one does not become a world-experienced general without furthering one's education. And this year, showing how slow a slow learner can be, when the General asked the scribe, "Will you accept the singular honor of putting out an updated directory for our 55th?" - well, how can one refuse such distinction? And so, '22 has a new directory with no errors, naturally, except those which can be attributed to the printer, the computer, cloudy eyeglasses, or addlepated memory. If you don't have the new directory and would like one, send a postcard to the class secretary. After all, who knows? You and your wife just might be correctly listed.
