Christmas cards and news gathered from mutual friends at Christmas parties have refreshed my mail bag. Thanks to so many of you who sent cards to Nancy and me this year. Two former '36 class secretaries, DickMorton and Norb Hofman, have been very considerate in sending along news of classmates. Norb, who is promotion director for McCall's Magazine sent me the photograph of Charlie Brooks and his family that appeared in this column in December. DickMorton, who is an advertising representative for the Saturday Evening Post has sent a number of clippings throughout the year including a recent photograph of Steve Stiles and two associates in the National Wholesale Hardware Association of which Steve is president.
Wedding bells have rung for Jim Gidney. One of our most desirable bachelors took the step on November 16 when Jim married Mary Ruth Ritchey in a Baptist ceremony at the home of the bride's parents, Mr & Mrs. Jesse S. Ritchey of Wellsboro, Pa The bride is a graduate of Mt. Holyoke and has a Master's Degree from George Washington University. Jim has a Master's Degree in psychology from Columbia and is employed by the Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Juvenile Court His brother John A. Gidney '41 was best man. Mr. & Mrs. Gidney will reside in Shaker Heights.
Clarence Mark Jr., who is now vice president and director of his family's multi-million dollar water well supply company, Clayton Mark & Company in Evanston, Ill., has two sons who have made their "mark" at Notre Dame. The older son, Tom, graduated last June and is now working on his Master's Degree at Northwestern in Business Administration. The number two son, Tim is a freshman at Notre Dame. Clarence also has three beautiful girls in his family, one is his wife, the former Germaine Dreis, whom he married in 1935 and his daughters, Mary Jean and Kathleen, who are in high school and grade school respectively.
Joe Herman has been appointed vice president of the New England Football Officials Association. Joe is a teacher in the high school at Hull, Mass. - George McCleary, who was formerly manager of advertising and sales promotion of the Film Division at the Olin Mathieson Chemical Company in New York City, has been transferred to their paper plant near Asheville, N. C. - Gil and Fran Balkham have moved into a new home at 153 Tahlulah Lane, West Islip, Long Island Gil is on the Dartmouth Club of New York's bridge team this year, continuing his masterly interest in the game. - Dr. Joe Haddad has returned to our old home town of Waterbury, Conn., to practice. His home is 603 Bunker Hill Ave., Waterbury 8, - Al Bunker, who is with the Marketing Division of Standard Oil Co. of California, has moved from Seattle to 19 Coleman Place, Menlo Park, Calif. Al's office is at 225 Bush St., San Francisco, in case you're travelling near the Golden Gate. - Dick Crosby leaves on February 1 for England on his sabbatical year from Colby Junior College where he is a professor of English - Gordon Gregory has moved down to 504 South Highland Avenue in Champaign, Ill., and Blair Rainey is out at 2472 East 23rd St., Tulsa, Okla. - Oliver P. Brown is division merchandise manager of the Carlisle Allen Co. in Painesville, Ohio. "O.P." married Mary Hart in Salem, Mass., in 1942 and they have six children. The sixth, is news to this column, and is a girl to follow the five boys. The older two sons, O.P. 11l and Stephen Russell, aged 17 and 16, have their sights set on the Hanover Plain. The Browns live at 812 Marshall Drive, Painesville, Ohio.
If you know what Ophthalmic Inventories are you know what Bob Eaton manages, for that's what he does at the American Optical Company in Southbridge, Mass. He also serves as instructor of advertising and statistics at Nichols Junior College in the nearby town of Dudley. Bob has just reactivated the P.T.A. in the Junior High School in Dudley, Mass., and for his efforts he has been made president and his wife, the former Caroline Stewart of New Haven, Conn., has been made corresponding secretary.
Joe Schaeffer is Director of the Rehabilitation Institution of Detroit. This is a move by the good doctor from Peoria - Fred and Lib Gonnerman with their four children are settled down at 5701 Rockmere Drive, Washington 16, D. C. Fred commuted from Saddle River, N. J., to "Washington for nearly a year, before he sold his beautiful home in the country. Fred has his own company in the Munsey Bldg. representing industrial firms to the Federal Government - The Cummins Engine Company, Inc. of Columbus, Ind., has placed Reece Hatchitt at the top of their Cummins Diesel Export Division to explore the possibilities of establishing additional manufacturing plants in Europe, the Far East and Latin America. Reece was formerly director of foreign operations of Dresser Industries in Dallas, Texas. - Roy Adams passes along the information that you can always tell a lady because she will sit side-saddle on a bar stool.
