You good buddies out there that drive with your ears on know for sure what it means to ask "how things look over your shoulder?" At year- end when taking stock of my own progress in the business world I decided to look over my shoulder and see what the road looked like for our other potential tycoons.

In the past we have covered the exploits of several fast-trackers moving up the ladders of big-name companies. This time around let's check in on a few of the not-so-well-known firms.

Many months ago, Dennis Purnell wrote to the Alumni Fund saying that although the Travelers Insurance Company had a matching gifts program his new place of employment didn't. Denny is now running his own insurance agency in Manchester, Satter-Purnell Associates, Inc., while living with wife Sandee, Ashley Lynn, and Dennis Jr. in Merrimack.

We all know of Manchester, but no one has ever heard of Harrisville, N.H. However, RickMonahon hopes to remove the veil of obscurity from this former mill town since he has spent three years renovating most of the buildings. As a consultant operating out of a small country architectual office, Rick travels all over the Northeast speaking and consulting on historic preservation problems. The only house in town likely to remain obscure is Rick's own which is suffering from consultant's neglect.

It comes as no surprise to learn that Sel Hannah has finagled a job tied in with skiing. He provides engineering services for mountain recreation resorts as director of the mountain engineering division of Dufresne-Henry Engineering Corp. Sel's well constructed and maintained bachelorhood toppled recently as he married Susan M. Sands. Look for them in Brownsville, Vt.

George Wittreich has cleverly read the handwriting on the wall in the energy locker room and set up his own Cambridge R&D firm. He is founder and business manager of Energy Resources Co., Inc. George, Diane and their boy-girl combo live in Winchester.

Brockton, Mass., receives what must be 99 per cent of the waking-hours output of young Tom Sampson. Not only is he funeral director and treasurer of Sampson Funeral Home, he is or has been president of the Massachusetts Funeral Directors Association, director of Campello Cooperative Bank, director of Brockton Regional Chamber of Commerce, trustee of Porter United Church, president of Southeastern Mass. Dartmouth Club, treasurer of Brockton Historical Society, and member of the Brockton Rotary Club, the Paul Revere Lodge, and the Commercial Club. Tom and Linda somehow have found time to put together a family of four children. Life must be either very organized or very chaotic in the Sampson house.

Leaving New England and heading west we pick up word that John Rogers has a new position in finance with Target Stores — a 50-store low-margin chain in the Midwest. St. Louis Park, Minn., is home for John and family.

Hugh Lade seems to have settled in pretty well in his home town of Seattle where he manages a family-held woodworking machinery company by the name of Multiscore Inc., and assists in managing a new stereo loudspeaker manufacturing company. Now that Hugh is retired from his '68-'69 stint in Tonga with the Peace Corps and rested up after a 5300-mile bicycle trip through Europe, he and Carol have time for frequent bird watching trips. They hope to gain national distribution so that trips east can be justified.

To appreciate the next and last entry for this month you might best find a copy of December 1, 1976 Forbes. The lead story is on Nigeria, the current location of Adebayo Elvshade. Although he has served in various capacities as a business executive with VAL of Nigeria, Ltd. — the largest national conglomerate — and other large plastics and electronics firms, Adebayo is now working for the chief executive of A. J. Seward/Kingsway Chemists. By comparison life in the financial district of Boston seems kinda dull.

Well, getting back to CB jargon: good numbers to ya guys. You're clean and green to the magic age of six five, so put the hammer down. 10-4?
