Happy spring - now that April Fool's Day and one of the worst winters on record for most of the country are behind us.
Helen Jackson, Dick's widow, has written from her new address - 12 Georgetown, Kennedy Drive, South Burlington, Vt. - "I am quite settled in South Burlington, only some 10 minutes away from our younger daughter and family. This is a hot-bed of Princeton and Yale people - also of Andover men, so that is a pleasant thing." She added, "The cold has abated today (1/21/77), but the papers tell me you are not in such a warm climate. When Pensacola gets 4 inches of snow and Miami has some white stuff, there must be something strange about 1977's weather."
According to Jud Pierson, our bequest chairman, the 24th life income trust by 1933 class members in favor of the College has just been established. This is in the amount of $5,000 - Old Pine High Yield Fund - and is this classmate's third life income trust.
Jud also reported the election of Rip Ripley as trustee of the Cheshire County YMCA (N.H.); he had served as a director since 1945. Congratulations to Rip for his extended service to the Y.
Having reported last month on the visitation of Tom and Toni Mann to Sanibel Island, Fla., for a month, with friends, I am particularly pleased now to add that the Manns have purchased a beautiful piece of property on Sanibel and are renting a house bordering on their property for a longer period next winter so as further to evaluate the property before building. It appears that the Manns will be spending most of their time between Cape Cod, Mass., and Sanibel Island, Fla., with briefer stays in Scotch Plains, N.J., and Colorado or Vermont for winter skiing.
Jack and Madge Wright also enjoyed a southern trip, having taken the car-train from Virginia to Florida on April 2 and having stayed until April 10 at Englewood, Fla. Then we had the pleasure of having them with us for a couple of days before going to the Florida Keys and traveling north in time for the opening of the fishing season.
Jean and I attended the third annual dinner meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Southwest Florida at the Beach Club Hotel, in Naples, Fla., on February 1, along with over a hundred other members and wives and guests. Unexpectedly, Ken Spang was there, and we were delighted to learn that since his retirement from the First National City Bank of New York, he has acquired an apartment at the Surfside Club, Gulf Shore Boulevard North in Naples for occasional visits and for renting during the interim periods. Ken has no announced plans but he hopes to remain active in the international banking and export field, which has been his particular career interest.
Word has been received through the Alumni Records Office of the death of Don Murray on February 11 in Beloit, Wis. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Arlene and family. An obituary will appear in this or a future issue.
Supplementing Bob Fox's newsletter, JohnMonagan's recent letter reported in detail on the '33 party they had at Thanksgiving time for Haland Jinnye Mackey. "Present were: Jane andPete Hart, Dorothy and Dick Lyon, Jinnye andHal Mackey, Rosemary and John Monagan,Chalant and Mannie Sprague and Helen andHank Smith. Songs were sung, toasts were drunk and the great days of Jack Cannell and Dolly Stark were re-hashed."
Don't forget the 1977 Alumni Fund campaign - and respond as early and as generously as you can afford after having paid the first installment on your federal income tax.
