A sad phone call from Jake Jacobson told me of the sudden death of Clarence Davies while on a business trip to Cleveland. Clarence was into almost everything concerning the rebuilding of New York City. Our sympathies to his wife Helen and his two sons.
Ed Brown, as usual, saved the day by sending some more due bill notes so I can catch you up on the doings of some more classmates. Thanks, Ed.
Jim Ballard says he has retired a second time as director of development and alumni affairs at Western Carolina University, but plans to continue teaching for a couple of years. Maybe the third time will be final, Jim. He will stay in the mountains of western North Carolina, because they remind him of the green and white mountains in Hanover.
Jack Cavanaugh is in "semi-harness" again after a year of recovery from open heart surgery. He enjoyed his first Christmas in Connecticut in many years. He's usually in Boca Raton and is probably there as you read this. Glad for the recovery!!
Merrill Dubay writes that he retired November 1, 1973. He highly recommends attending Alumni College for rejuvenation - both you and your spouse. He has three grandsons and a granddaughter, and all four are "sheer pleasure." Merrill and his wife would love to see any "visiting firemen" when they're not visiting Florida, Texas, or New Hampshire. They live in Lancaster, South Carolina.
Bill Hastorf says his son, Pete, who teaches in Taipei American School, Taiwan, Republic of China, was married on January 17, 1976, to Jean-Yen Tsai in Taiwan. Better go visit them, Bill. June and I stayed at the Grand Hotel there a year ago and it is absolutely super!!!
Hugh Johnson said a couple of noteworthy things have happened to him. Number one - he was married again in October, 1975, to a longtime friend, Louise, who also had a long career in the book business. Number two - he retired December 17 after 40 years in book publishing with Lippencott. They moved from Philadelphia to Ipswich, Mass. He says retirement "is a misnomer. I am teaching a four-month course in book publishing in the graduate division of Salem State College, am active as a Trustee of Ipswich Public Library and have returned to cross-country skiing." Welcome to the Wonderful World of Retirement, Hugh.
Bob Lindstedt said, "By next year we hope to make a football game or two, at which time we're due to win the league title again. We've just completed our first year with our advertising agency, and I must say it has been mostly pleasant." Hope you're right on the prediction, Bob, and congratulations on the agency's anniversary.
The Mad Nomad, Bud Yallalee, my favorite correspondent, wrote Ed as follows, "Ed, can you please check and see if I've paid already? Don't recall." Ed didn't tell me the results of his investigation, Bud, but just send another check - we need the money. Bud also wrote me a letter in January from Naples, Fla., and said he had a letter from John Kneisel, who told him the Charles River was frozen and covered with snowdrifts and he enjoyed watching people skiing across to Cambridge. Junie's daughter Ann is working on a bachelor's degree at Harvard-Radcliff College. He told Bud if he had any sense, he won't come north until the sun shines in April or May. Bud has taken his advice and hopes to make the NYC luncheon on May 10.
Bill Ely wrote me a fine letter in February to update me on his activities. He is retiring June 30 after 41 years in the field of education, 24 of which were as headmaster at Fairfield Country Day School. I covered most of Bill's news in the February column, but there were a few things I hadn't known. Their daughter Beth is married to Dr. Sergent Porter '56 and is in Meredith, N.H. They have two children and a third on the way. Bill's son Brewster is following in Pop's footsteps as assistant headmaster at Tuxedo Park School, Tuxedo, NY. Bill and Isabel will do some traveling, golfing, fishing, etc., come the end of June. Have fun, Bill, and thank you very much for your kind comments on the column. I appreciate them.
That about does it for April. See you in the May column - that is, if you will write me.
