On the first day of this new year, word came via aerogramme from our Tokyo correspondent that "The Dartmouth Club of Japan has just announced by acclamation the awarding of 1976's Road Trip of the Year Award to Bob Grondine for his dual effort in making it back to the States to preside as best man at the wedding of former roommate Rick Brown to Diane Fiero (Mount Holyoke '74) on October 9, and then on to the big one - Harvard weekend." It was noted that the recipient may have been encountered as "someone stumbling by mumbling in a strange foreign tongue" at the latter affair. The wedding, conducted in Princeton, N.J., "witnessed a '74 SAE mini-reunion," as it included usher Tom Guidi and "entertainment consisting of various and sundry songs and spectacles amply provided by Steve Whiting, Mike Pancoe, and Jim Gardner." Bob recounted that Steve, who is in his second year at the University of Virginia Law School, brought news that Jeff Stewart, now a second-year law student, could not divorce himself from duties on the F.mory University Law Review long enough to join the occasion. Jim Gardner has transferred from a medical school in Lille, France, to the New York Medical College, "bringing off the unusual feat of not losing any time by having spent two years abroad since he was accepted directly into the class of '78." Mike Pancoe "bewailed the plight" of the '74s at Dartmouth Medical School - Jack Stewart, Matt Putnam, and Eric Van Leuven - who are now toiling over their searches for internships. Bob also reminds us of the law students now looking for employment: Tom Guidi at Boston College, Steve Ring at Boston University, and Steve Sandburg at Harvard. The "humble correspondent" himself "still plans a dive into the legal milieu starting next fall." Bob sighs blithely, in closing, "anyone passing through Tokyo ..."
From the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Riggs Bagan reported that he and Johnie Tillman are president and vice-president, respectively, of the third-year class. Wishing the rest of us "a very happy un-bicentennial," they are anxious to know how other classmates are - especially others in medical schools. The Office of Alumni Records has their most recent addresses.
The new year also saw the promotion to officership of Head Agent Chris Gates, now assistant treasurer of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York. Enjoying the "Big Apple and living in Greenwich Village, Chris is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Dartmouth Club of New York City. He cites gleefully that "the majority of recent Dartmouth graduates who have located in NYC have chosen to take advantage of the club." He was en already "in the midst of launching" the Alumni Fund effort for our Class. Keep up the good work, Chris!
The gracious pen of Peter Hackett '75 related that Ty Nutt had been working for N.B.C. in Los Angeles with "Chico and the Man." He explained that Ty got a job for him there that he deferred in preference to graduate school, so, instead, Peter Parnell took the work on a show called "Snip!" (with David Brenner). Peter H. notes that the show was canceled but that Peter P. planned to stay in the L.A. area looking for work and trying to sell some of his plays to the theatres. He comments that Ty soon could get his "big directing break, and it literally could happen any day so keep your eyes peeled on the credits for the next couple of years!" Peter H. studies acting and directing currently.
A telephone conversation last January revealed that Bruce A. "Willy" Williamson is now in Cincinnati with Proctor and Gamble after graduating last spring from the University of Chicago Business School. Learning brand management in the toiletries division, Bruce is a brand assistant in charge of advertising for Scope mouthwash. In the same line of work with him is Jeff Jones, who works on advertising Pampers baby diapers. Willy recalled that Jeffs spouse Rita works for a department store company, also in advertising. He recounted that DonCasey has been involved with a rotating schedule of medical training - three months on each of a series of different areas of medicine - at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Don seems to find the learning experiences with patients even more rewarding than the academic ones, according to Willy. He mentioned that also there with Don is Mike Draznik who, likewise, is making the most of the same course of study. Willy alerted us that George Vorys and Gail Arch (Wheaton '74 and exchange '72-73) have made plans to be married in July. He remembered that George has begun a law degree at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, and that Gail has been working at a whaling museum near Boston. Congratulations!,
Also on Willy's list of notables is Bill Hart who still holds a post with Northern Trust in Chicago and has plans to marry a banking coworker this summer. Congratulations to you, Bill! Another note, on Neil Smith, is that he left a doctoral program in biochemistry at Duke University to accept an invitation to attend Rush Medical School in Chicago. A third congratulatory remark goes to Mark Ransom, now employed with Banker's Trust in Chicago, for his plans to marry Bonnie Carey next August in San Francisco. At the time of the communication with Willy, he was setting off on a trip to Charlotte, N.C., intending also to visit PerryBallard in Atlanta at the Emory University Medical School. Thanks for all the news, Willy!
In an announcement sent from Hanover and in the Sunday New York Times of January 16 was the news that Turner Paddock and Cynthia "Inky" Ford '76 are to be wed May 28. Turner has been an exploartion geologist with Bur West, a uranium firm owned jointly by Burlington Northern Railway and Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and has been living in Billings, Mont. Graduated with the class of *75, Inky is now in her second year of law school at Cornell University and has plans to work for the law firm of Crowley, Haughey, Hanson, Gallagher, and Toole this summer in Billings before returning to Cornell. Our best to you both!
Also in January, a news release sent to the College claimed Rick Sample as a newly enrolled graduate student at the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Ariz. The release explains that the AGSIM is "the only school in the U.S. devoted to training men and women for international careers," with students from every state and 60 foreign countries enrolled over its history of thirty years. Along with that information, the Office of Alumni Records also sent a clipping from the January 5 edition of the Washington Post announcing the engagement of Pat Stone and Barbara Gail Brittain. Pat is a third-year student at the University of Virginia Medical School and his fiancee, a graduate of The College of William and Mary, received a master's degree in reading from the University of Virginia last spring. Their plans are for rites in July. A hearty, reiterated congratulations to you!
This unending saga pauses until resuming next month with word from Greg Pulis and JimMiller, among news of many others. Please remember that our long-planned maxi-reunion for the first of this month is to be held at five post meridian at the top of Bartlett Tower ... (April Fool's!).
