The 1978 Hanover gathering of the Class was held October 12-14. The opening event was a dinner Thursday night at the Outing Club House. Sixteen classmates and their wives entertained Professor and Mrs. Bien (he is the Geisel professor), Fred Berthold (the Kelsey professor), and Charles McLane (Class of 1925 professor), who gave an illuminating talk after dinner on how a college teacher divides his time and effort in carrying out his various duties.

Other guests included four grandchildren of classmates and two 1925 scholars. The grandchildren were Larry Leavitt '81, Jim Howe '82, Lisa Harrison '82 (granddaughter of Frank Osgood), and Tony Hull '82 (granddaughter of Ford Whelden). The two scholars were Brian Hitchcock '81 and John Starbuck '82.

The Friday night dinner in the Drake Room at the Inn brought out 58 of us. There was an informal lunch at the Inn preceding the game on Saturday, and that night some 50 gathered at dinner in Alumni Hall of Hopkins Center, where the Class of 1923 also had a dinner in an adjoining area.

The football game started in the rain, but the weather cleared about halftime, and Dartmouth mounted a good touchdown drive in the third quarter to break a 3-3 tie and achieve a satsifying victory over Yale.

President Bill Jenkins opened the executive committee meeting in Reed Hall Saturday morning by reading the names of those deceased since the meeting last year. All present stood for a moment of silence and remembrance.

Bill also reported that a mail vote of the committee had resulted in a decision not to elect any successor at present to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Eddie Roessler. He also reported briefly on the meeting of class presidents held in Hanover just prior to our meeting.

It was decided to send a mailgram greeting to honorary classmate Sanny Chace, recovering from surgery in Deaconess Hospital, Boston.

The fall gathering for 1979 was set for the weekend of September 22, the date of the Princeton game. A two-day meeting is planned, with the executive committee meeting at 3 p.m., Friday, September 21.

Treasurer Mott Garlock informed the meeting that we started the last fiscal year with a surplus of $5,046. Receipts were $2,240 and interest $203. Expenses of $1,898 left us with a cash gain of $545. Seventy-seven per cent of the Class paid dues. On motion duly made and seconded, the treasurer's report was approved.

There was discussion of a gift from Mrs. Bates, sister of Eddie Roessler, of $1,000 for the memorial book fund. The treasurer is to check the background of the fund and report to the executive committee for a decision on the handling of this gift.

The meeting considered the question of classmates who do not pay dues but receive the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. It was decided to take no action other than the normal notices.

As head class agent, Curt Abel began his remarks with the statement, "The generosity of the Class is impressive." While $66,000 was given this year, this total included one large special gift, and Curt feels that the objective for next year should not exceed $55,000 and possibly not more than $50,000. He suggested the appointment of a committee to see what our goal should be for the 55th reunion gift to the College in 1980. The Class of 1923 had a very successful campaign this year, and Curt plans to review with them the procedures which made this possible.

Ford Whelden, who chairs the bequest program, stated that the 1977-78 year saw the achievement of a new high for the overall program and that 1925 continues to rank among the top classes in this 28-year-old program. A detailed report is being sent to all members of the Class.

Larry Leavitt, chairing the memorial gifts program, reported that eight class endowment funds generate about $5,700 each year for the Alumni Fund and that this year 107 widows gave a total of $5,855. With additional contributions from friends and relatives, the grand total of memorial giving from 1925 this year reached $12,211, almost 25 per cent of our entire Alumni Fund gift.

The president expressed the thanks of the Class to Lyn White for his work chairing the special programs, and especially for the planning and arranging of the fall meeting.

In the absence of Bob Weinig, who was unable to attend, the secretary spoke about Bob's organization of Citizen Inflation Fighters and distributed material which Bob had furnished for all interested members of the Class.

The following members of the executive committee were present:. Bill Jenkins, Bob McKennan, Charlie Moore, Curt Abel, Mott Garlock, Ford Whelden, Bob Borwell, Larry. Leavitt, Doug Archibald, George Zahm, Lyn White, and Pete Haffenreffer. Others there ,were: Bill Boies, Frank Kennedy, Ross Pefarl, Rad Tanzer, Don Hunt, Frank Wallis, Bob Reynolds, and Bill Sleigh.

Seen at one or another of the weekend functions were also Francis Brown, Gordon Churchill, Bunny Levinson, Nate Bugbee, Bill Thompson, Lang Spring, Herb Talbot, Terry McGaughan, Hal Stevens, Bud Reber, Mac Shepard, Bob Palmer, and June Bryant.
