The latest Mac Arthur "genius" grant winners include Jeff Weeks, who in his work "has helped to interpret the shape of the universe." This news came courtesy of Anne Barschall, who added: "Jeff has been working alone and at home, as a stay-at-home dad, foryears. At first he worked for free, though he's gotten some grant money in recent years. It's great to see him getting this kind of recognition and how being a stay-at-home dad has given him the kind of academic independence that has allowed him to do truly significant work over the long term, rather than trying to cope with constandy justifying his existence."
Meanwhile, Anne has left her position of 12 years at Philips Electronics to start her own practice as an intellectual-property attorney specializing in computer- and physics-related inventions. She hopes that working part-time will allow her to achieve a better balance with her roles as a mother and daughter. Anne acknowledges it will be "a neat trick, finding enough work to keep me busy part time, while not so much that I am busier than before."
Jane Erwin Hammett married Robert Dorsett on May 8 in Yosemite National Park, Calif. "Robert and I found each other last summer backstage at The Lamplighters (SF G&S Cos.) during a production of ThePirates of Penzance. Gilbert & Sullivan operettas (and The Lamplighters in particular) have provided me with some of the best moments of my life! In addition to being a baritone, Robert is a licensed acupuncturist and computer support tech person. I closed the San Francisco theater history-making run of The Phantom of the Opera on Jan. 3, bringing my combined POTO experience to about four years, with the National Tour and SF companies. Since then, I've been doing gigs here and there, directing, and enjoying being a new wife."
Bill Paganelli writes that "All is well in Burlington (Vt.). I ran a relay leg in the Burlington City Marathon and our team took second overall for men's masters (old wheezy geezers). Carol Hillman Van Dyke ran the whole thing, proving once again that Dartmouth women are tougher. Also saw Judy Geer '76, who ran in a relay as well. I heard that Jim Bassett recently took second in a half-marathon behind only BarryHarwick in our distinguished age group. My wife, Barb, is a computer systems consultant for our local hospital Fletcher Allen, while Chris 11, Kyle 6, and Cara 3 create endless carpooling with all their activities."
Curt Conroy writes that "little over a year ago my hobby of buying, renovating, and renting out little apartment projects in Menlo Park, Calif., became my relatively full-time occupation. Last fall I bought a 1979 Dodge camper van on which I've mounted my long board. I've taken trips with my dog to Canada, San Diego, and Florida, visiting Ted Kutscher in Seattle, Rob Fieldsteel in L.A., and Peter Dame in Jacksonville, Fla. Also spent Mardi Gras in New Orleans, visited Scott Korvalesy in Honolulu in November, and got together over the holidays with Arlo Frost and David LeMay in New York. Saw David again with Steve Strauss and Hunt Dyer on a trip East in May for the much-hyped high school 25th."
