Dartmouth football has had its ups and downs this season, but as predicted, our new coach Joe Yukica has come up with a scrappy, well-coached team, providing spectators with a fun afternoon, regardless of the outcome. Perhaps this explains in part why we have had a good October turnout of classmates returning to Hanover. I had to be out of town for the BU game early in the month, but I understand there was a good turnout that weekend. One of my local spys spotted Bill and Yummie Graulty up from Hartford with guests from Santa Barbara, Bill and Pattie White were out from Wilmette to visit undergraduate son Bill Jr. They joined forces with Dick and Myrtle Tasso who last year moved out from the Chicago area to Norwell, Mass.

Our mini-reunion for the Yale game was a great success. We had close to 30 classmates, plus wives and offspring, for a total of almost 100 people back on the Hanover plain. I personally crossed paths with Frank and Pat Ettari, Robbie and Joan Smith, and Harvey andDottie White (Harvey is now back in the investment business with H. C. Wainwright in Boston). Sam and Sue Johnson were out from Buffalo with Rosemary Marlette, Jack Whitman,Bill and Margaret Bowers, Frank and MaryJane Cole, Dave and Jean Weld, and Ham andNancy Bailey (first visit with daughter Ann in this year's freshman class). Carl and Betty LouPeterson, Jim and Jean Von Rohr, Don andMargaret Furber, Nick and Ellen Vorys and son Fred '79, Earl and Suzanne Angstadt, and Jimand Jane Barnet were also there.

As billed, Bob and Jackie Kimball hosted a large group of us before the game. We had a steady drizzle right up until game time, but thanks in part to a large tent in the back yard the inclement weather surely didn't dampen the spirits of our group. The game was a good one, enhanced by a break in the rain and a wellearned victory.

Saturday evening most of us plus friends (about 75 in total) descended on the Pierce's Inn in Etna where Reg and Nancy Pierce provided us with wine, women, song, and a great dinner. It was a long day, but I am pleased to report everyone held up amazingly well and seemed to have a fine time.

At the start'of this great weekend Jack Whitman called a well-attended class executive committee meeting. Aside from the usual housekeeping matters (secretary and treasurers reports, etc.) there were two major points of discussion. The first concerned a report on a class project of providing a scholarship for an Indian girl, Rachel Froman, now a member of the Class of '82. Rachel is a fine young lady from Broken Arrow, Okla., whose grandfather was chief of the Peoria-Miami tribe now located in northeastern Oklahoma. This scholarship was awarded to her at the suggestion of the Admissions Department, which has experienced considerable difficulty enrolling qualified Indians. After review of the project the committee confirmed its support and desire to perhaps expand the program should funds become available in the future.

The committee also considered and warmly accepted a proposal to adopt Alden H. (Whitey) Burnham as a member of our Class. Whitey, a graduate of Springfield College '45, has been in Hanover since 1960 when he succeeded Tom Dent as coach of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. At Dartmouth he coached 14 ailAmerican selections in lacrosse and four in soccer. He was the College's first three-sport coach when he added the wrestling team (1961-66) to his other duties. He coached three Ivy League championship teams - lacrosse in 1964 and 1965, and soccer in 1964. In 1969 Whitey became assistant director of athletics. Over the years he has also been active in many associations and a recipient of numerous awards. Whitey is indeed a loyal and highly respected member of the administration, but more importantly he is a wonderful individual with a sharp wit and great sense of humor. He is also one of the area's finest after-dinner speakers, but best of all he has a delightful wife, Joanne, who complements him admirably. Needless to say, we are certain Whitey makes a great addition to our ranks.
