Is someone else missing a summer? I recall anticipating Memorial Day, and the next thing I knew, Labor Day had slid right by.
Hats off to Head Agent Bill Enos, the class agents, and the 364 members of the class who participated in the fund drive. I used to compliment Krete for what he had done on, with, and to us — but the accolade goes to Bill.
I know you remain interested in the postmaster in Etna and some of you have kept him reasonably busy during the summer, as he reads your messages and passes them on to me. We had a pleasant note from Bill Bishop, who has returned to Nova Scotia from the Bahamas. His sounds like a very busy life; he is involved in public school education during the week, and on Sundays he is pastor of Saint John's Church, a small Anglican (Episcopal) Church founded in 1791. In his spare time, he is a commissioner of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. To those of you visiting Newfoundland, Bill recommends a visit to the well-known towns of Joe Batt's Arm, Heart's Content, and, last but not least, Seldom-come-by.
I had a very pleasant dinner with Dick andBetsey Higgins in Chicago in early June and was charmed by their two daughters.
Sandy Frank reminded me that the family business, A. Frank & Sons, headquartered in Baltimore and founded by his great- grandfather, will be a mere 115 years old in 1980. Sandy's leisure-time activities include tennis, travel, and fun with three grown children and two grandchildren.
Kent Barclay wrote from Birmingham, Mich., advising us that he sees Dick Godfrey and Bill Simpson occasionally and Phil Moon on a regular basis, since they both attend the same church. A 30-year career with the Ford Motor Company finds Kent currently as director of marketing services, which sounds likeva demanding position. Kent and Tay do find the time to visit their condominium in Boca Raton, so all appears to be well.
It was nice to know that Lyman Whittaker's daughter was married in Annapolis early in the summer.
And that skims the mailbag for this month. Directly after writing to me with news for next month, get in touch with Allen Dingwall to make room reservations for the mini-reunion on October 26 and 27, so we can all enjoy the Cornell football weekend.
I don't mean to close on a low note, but we lost three friends during the summer: BillWhitcomb, John Callihan, and Bill Brodie. Obituaries should appear in this or a later issue.
Edward Neil McMillan Jr. '41 was presented with an Alumni Award in June for his contributions to his college and his fellow human beings. After Air Force service during World War II, he attended Tuck and eventually joined Merrill Lynch in New York. In 1970, he resigned his post there as senior vice president and director because of his conviction that people with business experience were needed in education. He received his M.B.A. from Boston University in 1972 and now serves as an associate professor at Bunker Hill College, helping motivate young people from deprived backgrounds. McMillan has also been active in religious and community work and in Dartmouth affairs, including as class agent, class president, head of the Class Presidents Association, and member of the Alumni Council.
