Autumn, with its colorful foliage, is now with us and the first football game of the season with Princeton is over. Although the contest was a disaster for us (the first shutout in some years), we may hope for better results as the team develops. A fair number from the classes of '17, '18, and '19 got together in the Tavern Room of the Inn for lunch that day to reminisce about old friends and good times. The class of 1917 was represented by Helen Brooks, Josephine Carr,Mary McCulloch, Dot Howe, Phil Evans and two daughters, and Alden Vaughan. Phil's grandson and family were also on hand with Phil's tiny great-grandson, but they did not lunch with us. Karl Thielscher had a party of his own, but had a bit of conversation with us before he left. George and Florence Clark had hoped to come, but they did not make it since they had caught some kind of bug.
Dartmouth Night will be celebrated this year on October 26, the day before the football game with Cornell. Swarms of Dartmouth alumni have come for this event since it was reinstated by student request. In addition, hordes of people from the surrounding country come to enjoy the songs, the short speeches, the bonfire, and the high spirit of the occasion. Your secretary will represent the class of 1917 in the torchlight parade and the following morning at a breakfast for the heads of classes.
We must report the sad news of the death of Mrs. Howard Shaffer and of William Crisp. Bill's obituary will appear in this or an upcoming issue of the Alumni Magazine, although Bill had died in 1978. We wish that we might have more timely reports of deaths of our classmates.
