Last week I was pleasantly surprised when Dennis Barnes dropped into my office. Dennis was out in San Francisco partly because he was representing one of our companies. He is now an attorney in Washington, D.C., with the firm of Morgan, Lewis, and Bockius and specializes in transportation law. He expects to be back in San Francisco in the near future to take some depositions and hopes to bring his wife Ingrid at that time so we can get together again to try some of San Francisco's excellent restaurants. Dennis advised that Ingrid has her own pottery studio, while his main outside interest is golf, since they now live, with their two children Richard, 17, and Kendra, 13 right on the tenth fairway of the golf course in Montgomery County, Md.
Some news now about our illustrious president, John E. Clark Jr., who has been named to chair the Bergen County region in the Campaign for Dartmouth, a major capital gifts fund drive. He will direct a group of volunteers soliciting leadership gifts from Dartmouth alumni, parents, and friends as part of the College's five-year campaign with a goal of $160 million. The Campaign for Dartmouth, launched two-and-a-half years ago, has now raised $90 million toward the $ 160 million goal. Of that amount, half is being sought to increase the College's endowment, with the balance being utilized for current expenditures and to strengthen both the undergraduate and the graduate programs. John, as head agent of our class prior to 1977, set four consecutive College giving records. A trustee' of the Dartmouth Club of Northern New Jersey, he has received the Alumni Fund Committee Trophy and the Roger C. Wilde Reunion Award. Currently a member of the Ridgewood Rotary Club and the West Side Presbyterian Church, John heads the business and professional leadership section of the United Way and is vice president of John E. Clark Inc., Insurance Management.
Another Campaign for Dartmouth worker we have some news on is J. Stephen Reid. Steve has been naoed to chair the Hawaii region. Steve is the recent treasurer and presidential nominee of the Dartmouth Club of Hawaii. He has held several offices, including that of president, with the Honolulu General Agents and Managers Association and is currently the secretary of the Hawaii Estate Planning Council. President of J. S. Reid CLU and Associates, Reid and Reid Ltd., Steve is also on the board of directors of the Hawaii chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters.
If you read this column, then you know we have been asking you for your support in the form of a news contribution. The response has been poor. Unless we receive a better flow of news and that means each of you is responsible for sending us at least one item about yourself or about another class of '62 alumnus -we will be running very short columns in the future. The choice is yours. I hope this plea will result in a virtual avalanche of news items!
