By the time this column appears in print, our 25th reunion will be history and our term as class secretary will be finished. Since we have no backlog of news which cries out to be published, we thought it would be appropriate to make a few observations about the purpose of this column and what it takes to make it work. It is our hope that this will be of help to our successor.
This column is intended to be a forum for news about classmates that might be of interest to readers from "neighboring" classes and, in fact, any alumnus. Items that relate specifically to class functions, etc. are better publicized in the class newsletter.
When news of a classmate appears in the print media, the alumni office sends the clip- ping to the appropriate class secretary. News releases from various corporations announcing promotions, etc. also are filtered from the College to the secretary. Frankly, there are many months when little, if anything, of this nature is received by the class secretary, and he must then rely on gleanings from reply cards to the class newsletter editor and scribbled notes on the bottom of class dues notices. The oc- casional person who takes time to write a letter outlining his recent activities, family additions, sexual aberrations, etc. provides a nugget glittering in an otherwise empty pan.
Lest the foregoing sound as if we didn't enjoy our functions as class secretary, nothing could be further from the truth. It has been wonderful being involved in the decision-making of the ex- ecutive committee and staying close to so many classmates. We do hope, however, that you will have mercy on our successor and take the rou- ble to drop a newsy letter to him sometime dur- ing the next year. It will not only make his job easier but will make the column better reading for more people.
