As we were contemplating how to build a column for this issue without benefit of any stored-up material, we took a break to attend a jazz concert at a private club here in Milton. The band was a hybrid group whose advertised name was foreign to us, but we were delighted to find that the backbone of the band was composed of members of the State Street Ramblers.
The Ramblers will be entertaining us all through our reunion stay, and I can assure you they are talented and versatile musicians. Bill Stout '51 and Jim Wheaton '54 play clarinet and trombone respectively and are veterans of several 25th celebrations from both sides of the fence so you know they will be exciting.
Treasurer Jed Isaacs received a short note from Bill Foggle, stating that he would be traveling to France in February and that son John would be in Cambodia, the Philippines, and China during the coming year. Bill, who resides'in Longmeadow, Mass., has been one of Mike Gorton's mainstays as an Alumni Fund agent over these last few years.
A newsletter from the New England Council Inc. revealed that Jack Doyle has been put in charge of membership development for this year. The council, a business organization representing nearly one third of New England's private sector jobs, works through a voluntary committee system on specific issues affecting the region's economy. Program areas include energy and natural resources, transportation, taxation, business regulation, and enterprise development. Jack is a partner in the prestigious accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company in Boston.
Our spies tell us that the "amusing and informative" editor of Yankee magazine, Jud Hale, has been at it again, amusing and informing the New Century Club in Needham, Mass., last November. The pre-trial publicity noted that Jud was a tank commander in the Third Armored Division from 1955 to 1958. Now we know what created all this pent-up amusement and information.
Speaking of amusement, one of the highlights of our reunion committee meetings is watching Dana Hennig ar trying to convince Reunion Treasurer Ralph Sautter that his "refreshment" budget is under control.
Those of you who are into running should be prepared for an early start for Dick Mount's mini-marathon on Friday morning of reunion. Information on distance, prizes, etc., as well as entry blanks will be sent out well in advance of reunion.
Early returns (this column is being written in January) put our class ahead of the last two 25th reunion classes in projected attendance at this checkpoint. Bob Fanger and his committee have things well under control and Jud Hale (Abe Weatherwise) guarantees no snow. Be sure to reserve your place now for June 12-15.
