Everything is pointing toward a record turnout for the Dartmouth Night weekend, October 24, when Cornell comes to Hanover. We've taken over the entire Norwich Inn. We've a class meeting there Saturday morning and a banquet Saturday night. Lunch will be at Leverone Field House and cocktails after the game in the Drake Room at Hopkins Center. Remember, your family and friends are welcome at all of the events.
Back in May, we received an Honorable Mention Award for Class of the Year. Having permanently retired this award several times in the past, I guess this is the best we can hope for any more. Noted among our accomplishments were being the unqualified leader in minireunion programming, strong communications and class involvement, and outstanding Alumni Fund results, especially in solicitation teams and participation. A big Wah-Who-Wah for all those who worked hard to make that happen.
But if our Alumni Fund results were great last year, this year they were almost in a class by themselves. Ron Lazar and Dick Joslin led us to an unprecedented $167,000 and 86.7 per cent participation. While over 144 classmates are involved in solicitation (approximately one out of four) some made fantastic contributions in hours and results. They include John Cernius, Bob Core, Pete Reich, Bob Lambert, Dick Loewenthal, Jack.Senne, Jack Newton, Fred Stephens, Dick Giesser, Dick Fleming, and Carl England. Another Wah-Who-Wah.
Paul Paganucci has been named vice president for finance and administration of the College. He thus becomes the key operating person. Interestingly, this was one of the first announcements that President McLaughlin made.
At the Alumni Council meeting injune, Fred Stephens was presented an Alumni Award in recognition of his long service to the College. An excerpt from the citation appears elsewhere in this issue. Fred also has a new job at Gillette, where he has been made vice president for business relations for Gillette North America. This includes maintaining corporate relationships with key customers and vendors, consumer services, and sales and sales management training.
George Krall was elected a vice president of General Electric Company. He is general manager of the aircraft engine manufacturing division, headquartered at the aircraft engine group's plant near Cincinnati. George has been with GE for over 20 years.
Dick Cahn was elected to the presidency of the Suffolk County Bar Association. Dick lives in Huntington and his law firm, Cahn, Wishod & Wishod, is over in Melville.
Speaking of Long Island, not everybody goes to the Hamptons for the summer. Both Ellen and Fran L'Esperance and Adair and Bill Beutel rented in the beautiful and quiet town of Quogue.
You will be interested to know that five members of our class are on the Alumni Council. Bill Vitalis replaced Dick Dunham as senior member of the Dartmouth Athletic Council, Bill McCarthy represents the mid-Atlantic states and Bob Lambert the middle-Western states, Bob Longabaugh represents the Alumni Club Officers Association, and I represent the Class Secretaries Association. Bob Lambert and Bill Vitalis are also on the executive committee.
Don Goss, newsletter editor sine qua non, hosted a mini-reunion this summer on Block Island. Full details will be in a newsletter. The crowd included Dick Fleming, Fred Hitt, Tom Bagg, John Rogers, Ron Lazar, Dick Joslin, Don Smith, Werner Graeve, Ted Merritt, Chuck Luker, Don Bigham, and John Home. That's it for this month.
