Is it possible that the grip of winter is loosening? The year is certainly not rising to the great expectations that were heralded last New Year's Eve. At least, we won't have to endure any more stories, exaggerated or otherwise, about other winters.
Entirely without design, Fred Carleton has returned to the Hanover plain. He has taken an interest in the K-Ross Building Supply Center in Lebanon. The business is fabricating, reinforcing, and structural steel and distributing supplies used in concrete and foundation work. They also sell other building supplies to contractors and dealers. They confine their efforts to Vermont and New Hampshire - which is setting a pretty good business pace. Right now, Fred is living alone in Hanover, but plans to bring Molly and the kids up in a month or two. They plan to build a house this summer.
A voice coming from the wilderness belongs to Harvey Medlinsky. The first word in a long, long time. He has pursued a career in the theater, primarily directing. Right now he is the producer-director at the Arlington Park Theater outside Chicago. He has recently directed several episodes of the Tony Randall Show and the Bob Newhart Show. He's having a ball jetting back and forth between L.A. and Chicago and working with people like the above and Milton Berle, Burt Reynolds, and Jack Klugman, just to name a few.
Jim and Shirley Cobb went to Sugarbush for Christmas and ended up renting a house near Carol and Bob Henderson. Both families skied together and the snow was great.
Bob Nicholson travels throughout Michigan and Indiana for Warner & Swasey. He sent us a note from an Indianapolis paper announcing that Ward Hamm has become a vice president of Baker, McHenry, & Welch, Inc., a construction firm. He will be responsible for marketing and sales activities in the Midwest and Southeast. He joined the company in 1974.
When last we left John Kennedy, he was promoting the Hovercraft in Florida. Unfortunately, the concept never did catch on in the U.S. He's now working for Yardney Electric Corp., a specialty battery manufacturer in New London, Conn. He's director of new products, with principal responsibility for the application of high energy batteries to electric cars. The revival is real. John and Barbara and their two children have a lovely home in Mystic, which is not far from Mystic Seaport. Having tried living in Texas, California, and Florida, they believe there's no place like New England.
Occasionally, we repeat newsletter items here for the benefit of those who normally do not see that publication. It's noteworthy that PhilBeekman was named president of Seagram Co. After a long and successful career at Colgate-Palmolive where his last job was head of the international operation, he was lured away. Phil also becomes a member of the seven-man executive committee and a Seagram director.
That's it for this month.
