The women's basketball team was the highlight of the winter sports season. Individually, skier Tiger Shaw, a freshman, took top honors as he finished first in the slalom at the N.C.A.A. championships held at Lake Placid, New York. Shaw placed third in the giant slalom and his efforts enabled Dartmouth to finish sixth in the national competition. The Dartmouth squash team finished the season with 10 wins in regular season matches for the first time in the 45-year history of the sport at Dartmouth. The Big Green was ranked fifth nationally because of its 10-5 record. The Green lost its first four matches and then won nine of its last 10 outings. The women's varsity squash team had a 6-5 record. The men's varsity swimming team had a 6-4 overall record and finished sixth in the E.I.S.L. competition. Women swimmers had a 3-6 overall mark and were winless in three Ivy League outings. The men's varsity hockey team had an up-and-down season and finished the season with a 10-15-1 mark. The skaters had a 3-7 Ivy League record. Senior cocaptain Shaun Teevens was named the team's most valuable player. Juniors Mark Ardagna and Bill Flanigan will co-captain the team next winter. Men's varsity track was 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League while women's varsity track was 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the Ivy League. Men's varsity gymnastics was 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Ivy League. Men's varsity basketball posted a 7-19 overall record. The Green cagers were 1-13 in the Ivy League. The team defeated Yale, 88-85, in the final game of the season to record its only Ivy League victory and snap an 11-game losing streak. Senior co-captain Jon Edwards scored a career-high 29 points and assisted on seven other baskets to lead Dartmouth. Juniors Kevin Jones and Steve McNamara will co-captain the basketball team next winter.
