The death of Pennington Haile, chronicled elsewhere, has prompted several tributes to the memory of his generosity both to the College and to the Hanover community. Dartmouth's holdings on Mt. Moosilauke, which have led to its characterization as "Dartmouth's Mountain," have been made possible very substantially by Penn's benefactions, which involved gifts to the College of over 4,000 acres. A music scholarship which he established in memory of the pianist Gerald Tracy has been part of his constant support of the arts at Dartmouth. At their joint concert on December 18 the Hanover Chamber Orchestra and the Bel Canto Chamber Singers dedicated to his memory a performance of Schubert's Mass in G Major, and on January 4 the Concord String Quartet made a like tribute with their entire all-Beethoven concert.
Class President Don Wilbur has announced the membership of the committee for 1924's 60th reunion, coming up all too soon: RichardMorin, chairman; Donald Bartlett, vice chairman; Robin Robinson, treasurer; Chauncey Allen, memorial chairman; and David Dyche, adviser.
Chick Austin has reported making contact with Frank Granata, Bob Davidson, and JimWheaton at a December luncheon of the Dartmouth Club of Southwest Florida at Naples.
Stan Curtis has been active in volunteer work in the Indian River, Fla., Memorial Hospital for some years, putting in 2,000 hours as a patient-escort in the x-ray and nuclear medicine departments. The Curtis menage has just moved from Vero Beach to Juno Beach, where they will be at the Waterford, which they have laughingly nicknamed "The Living End"!
If you shoud be driving at the corner of Woodland Road and South Road in Rye Beach, N.H., you would come on a rock-bordered circular garden, eight feet in diameter, with flowers surrounding an official "STOP" sign. This is locally and affectionately known as Tonis Park, because the planting is supplied by Frank Tonis. You might even find a "TONIS PARK" sign, if souvenir hunters have not removed it and Frank hasn't had time to replace it from his own workshop. The latest wrinkle is special stationery provided by the local school printing club, headed "Tonis Park" and "Frank Tonis Keeper of the Green." What better title for a Dartmouth alumnus! Keep the good work, Frank!
This month's column is being prepared by Robin Robinson, as an interim substitute for Dana Bent, who suffered a cardiac arrest on December 21 and is now recuperating. Very best wishes for speedy recovery go to him from every member of the class.
