After praising you a couple of months ago for your generous response to Norm Fine's newsletter, I've suddenly found myself a week away from this month's deadline with an empty mail bag. An urgent call to Norm produced the following news flashes from Sausalito to Hanover.

Starting out on the West Coast, Bob Sachs seemingly enjoys the environmental traumas of California living. Recently, Bob's wife Phyllis gave birth to their third daughter, who joins her eight- and ten-year-old sisters. This is refreshing news, for I am finding the emergence of grandchildren of our classmates depressing. We just have to assume that Bob is a late bloomer but he obviously has everything squared away now. Perhaps he's even the winner of the last-class-child award.

In last month's column we reported George Bates's move to Albuquerque, but neglected to give you his new address: 5031 Justin Drive, N.W. 87114. George promises more involvement with Dartmouth alumni, so give him a call and put him to the test.

Would you believe we have more news from Pikeville, Ky.? Hold your hats, baseball fans, for this is a biggie. Through the efforts of Frank Carlton and Pikeville College's president, Jackson Hall '54, "we may get the Chicago Cubs rookie team in Pikeville in 1983." Check future columns for final results on this and the exciting cut-through project. Swinging north to Wilmette, Gale Roberson promises to be in Hanover next June to celebrate the graduation of his daughter Cristie, class of '83. There should be a flock of '55 parents at this one. Gale's son Michael graduated in '80.

John Barker, who was in Hanover for the Dartmouth Night weekend, mentioned that Eliot Smith "adaptively represented Dartmouth at the recent inauguration of the new president at Wayne State" in Michigan. His wife Dorothy is an academic officer at the school. John was sorry not to have had an opportunity to visit with more of his classmates while out East in October, but he was busy with his two children, John '83 and Julie '86. "There is economy in numbers, since we do save a 20( stamp by enclosing two! tuition checks in one envelope."

Moving farther east, an announcement has been received that John French has become a, member of the law firm of Appleton, Rice and Perrin of 444 Madison Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10022.

Swift Lawrence continues to make his way through the labyrinth of banking positions at the Pawtucket Institution for Savings and Trust in Rhode Island. Not too long ago we reported his ascendancy to the presidency, and more recently we have received word of his election to the post of chief executive officer of both the Savings and the Trust companies; in addition, he serves on the boards of both institutions.

Accepted early decision into the class of '87 is Hugh Brady's son Brian, from Belmont Hill School in the greater Boston area.

Whilst we're on the Boston area, I understand that Dick Mount, who began peddling I.B.M. typewriters there before they became electrified, is now taking courses in preparation for selling their new personal computers. And I thought you couldn't teach an old dog new tricks.

Returning to beautiful New Hampshire whence we were launched, Ron Campion, who is president of a local haberdashery, has been elected chairman of the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital corporation. Ron has been a member of the board of trustees since 1977.

I can recommend Jud Hale's recent book Inside New England. Having received a copy myself, I can personally attest that it would be appreciated. You will enjoy Jud's light-hearted trip through the six-state area. The anecdotes are witty and will invoke fond memories of the years you spent or are spending here.

Dartmouth visits West Point on September 24 to play the Army football team. In June you will receive from the College a brochure giving full details of the day's events, including a reservation form for both a box luncheon and a dinner. You will also be contacted through the newsletter, for the class executive committee will most iikely be arranging a mini-reunion. West Point is a beautiful site, and with the color of the corps adding to the festivities, it will be a perfect day for children and friends.

On the international scene, I'm off to Frankfurt, but will return in time to deliver you another exciting column next month.
