In the October issue, we inadvertently wrote that Dick and Vivian Cahn had hosted the cocktail party and dinner for the family and friends of the sons and daughters of'53 at graduation. Actually, that herculean job was done by the pride of Cincinnati, Charlotteand Jack Avril. Dick and Vivian were the hosts for all of the families of '53 at Freshman Parents Weekend in April. There is just no end of classmates gladly stepping forward to arrange these events which add so much to a trip back to Hanover.
Did you see Burton Bernstein's essay about his 52nd birthday? It was in The New YorkTimes back in February. It seems that Burtie drove by a pond and saw some boys slapping a hockey puck around. Without thinking, he raced home, dug out his old black hockey skates, grabbed an ancient stick, and returned to the pond. The boys ranged in age from 10 to 14. Before long, Burtie was accepted and they had a rousing game of three-to-a side. He wrote that it was the best birthday present imaginable.
Back in November, Bob Longabaugh represented Dartmouth at the inauguration of Louis C. Vaccaro as president of the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. As you may know, Bob is a member of the Alumni Council, serving as a representative of the Club Officers Association.
In January, a group of undergraduates organized a four-day conference on "Alcohol and other Drugs at Dartmouth." Two years ago, the College sponsored a three-day conference on "Alcohol at Dartmouth," which was initiated at the urging of Norm Carpenter, in response to growing nationwide concern with alcohol abuse at all levels of society and at the College in particular. There were seminars run by student leaders and prominent alumni in the sports world, and there was a panel with Dartmouth faculty and alumni. Norm returned to again play a significant role. He moderated a panel on "How To Be a Good Friend." Norm began the discussion by labeling alcoholism as a problem that permeates our society. He said that education on drug abuse of all kinds at the College level was extremely important and that Dartmouth's reputation as a party and drug haven struck him as being very, very sad. Other members of the forum agreed. It's very clear that events such as this underscore the College's strong sense of responsibility to the students.
When General Electric and Pratt and Whitney engaged in the great jet engine war, GE emerged as the big winner. The Air Force was greatly impressed with the reliability of the product, the spare parts program, and the total company back-up. George Krall is the manager of GE's jet engine division in Cincinnati. Wah-Hoo-Wah!
Don't forget the class meeting scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at Blunt Alumni Center following Class Officers Weekend festivities. If you are in the area, please plan to attend.
One last note about reunion: John Kennedy has formed a band. So far Bob Derzon,Larry Garvin, Jim Wheaton, and Don Goss have signed up to be horn-blowers. John needs more support.
