It's 1984 and about time that some of us were approaching the beginning of the midlife crisis the big Four O. Just how many of you have crossed the "bar" and not told anyone? (It's easy for me to say; I don't get there until next year.) But for the rest of the year, I want to sponsor a prize (it may even be valuable) for the best story I hear of a party, black bash, surprise kidnapping, or even uneventful event celebrating (mourning) your loss of innocence. To be given, of course, at next year's reunion. How about it? Let me know!

There are signs that some of us are crossing the hump already. Bill Hayden's son Will has been accepted early decision into the class of 1988. Wow! Jim Season and I aren't even close! (Jim phoned me just in time for this month's column, to say that his second son was born March 2. Read next month's column to find out his name and all the details.) Back to Bill. In his steadily progressing Navy career, Bill has been promoted to executive officer of the nuclear aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Eisenhower. All this means is that Kit will be splitting her time between Virginia Beach and Hanover. I'm personally glad to see that you don't have to go to Annapolis to progress in the Navy, and that we have liberal arts graduates in the military hierarchy.

Pete Dorsen showed signs of strain during St. Paul's winter carnival "King Boreas" cross country ski race. He only lost by "a minute or two" (or three or four . . .) to friend John Burton (Harvard class of 1952). Now you might wonder why I'm mentioning a Pilgrim in this column. I am too. In fact I'm wondering why Pete brought it up. Could it be that Burton's son was in the class of 1980? Pete, I definitely can't use the picture of you two that you sent (besides the . fact it was color).

And Lance Tapley was recently elected to the national governing board of Common Cause. Even after all these years, Lance says, "I'm shameless!" I doubt it. Charlie Stuart returned to Hanover last January IS to help his cohorts Ted Koppel and Peter Jennings host the Democratic National Debate in Spaulding Auditorium. Charlie is a television news producer for ABC. He and Sarah also had a baby last November 11. Their first is a girl, Hunter McGuire. See, Jim, you're not the only one still coming!

And for the finale this month, Dick Smith wrote that after 12 years in the upper Amazon in Peru, he has moved back to Boston. Actually to Wellesley Hills. He is a post doc fellow in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard and a visiting fellow at the Cultural Survival Institute in Cambridge (he's well qualified). Dick relates a tale that happened while he was trekking the wilds of the Palcazu River in Peru two years ago with a botanist from the Chicago Field Museum. After chit chat and small talk, Dick said, "Where did you go to school?" And Robin Foster replied, of course, "Dartmouth!" They both immediately decided to re-up their class dues after 20 years and to contribute to the Alumni Fund! How about you?

Seven Dartmouth alumni, five of whom are pictured here, have met regularly this past year aspart of Naval Reserve VTU 0019 of Newport, R.I., in support of the Center for War Gaming atthe Naval War College. From left to right are Commander Robert Blake '65, Captain KermitThompson '62, Captain Robert Dean '54 (and Tuck '55), Lieutenant Commander John HanleyJr. '71 (and Thayer '73), and Commander Larry Duffy '65. Not pictured are Captain Robert Gile'56 and Commander Ken McGruther '65, a speaker the weekend the photograph was taken.
