The month of April slipped by somehow, unnoticed, what with business travel, a tennis tournament (NutraSweet's sponsorship of the Amelia Island WTA tournament, if you saw it on TV), a national convention, a new home (same building, so no change of address), and just plain trying to grind through the reports, forms, and general paperwork that tend to build up. This column, which is due in Hanover on May 1, is already one day late. The news from the class is sparse, which, while making it easier to get a column to Hanover in short order, might not be conducive to interesting reading.
The annual Class Officers Weekend in Hanover is starting a few days from now as 1 write on May 4. I am looking forward to seeing a clutch of 's2s there. If the recent good weather holds out, it should be a delightful time. As part of the activities, there is the option of an afternoon hike over the Holt's Ledge area near the Dartmouth Skiway on Saturday. I have signed up to go. The last time I indulged in such a college-sponsored event was at our 30th reunion when I joined a group that hiked up Mt. Moosilauke. that occasion put me out of action for a few days with a sprained ankle when some tired old leg muscles just gave under the weight of a somewhat overample upper body. This year it should be different since some of the upper body has sagged to down around the ankles, significantly reducing my center of gravity.
The only classmate I have had contact with recently is Ken Heusinkveld, with whom I had lunch. Ken is with the Wessel Company, a printing firm in the Chicago area that specializes in high-quality large runs of catalogs, sales materials, and the like. I don't know how we got on the subject, but we started talking about rafting. My first experience is coming up in July with a week on the Salmon River. Ken mentioned that he had recently gone down the Salmon with a group which included his brother, David '49. He even had the photos in his car. The lunch turned into a travelogue of this great trip which allowed me to preview the course. Fortunately, the group with which I am going is not counting on me to provide profound, if any, knowledge of white-water rafting.
We have come to the end. I hope you all have sent in your gift to the Alumni Fund. If you haven't, I am sure that as you read this, you still have time to sneak something in under the wire.
Peter H. Zischke '52 received the Dartmouth Alumni Award at Class Officers Weekend. In 1955 he began work with his father and brother in a family-owned consulting and administrative firm. The firm grew, finally merging with the Wyatt Company, of which Zischke is now vice president, a member of the board of directors, and chairman of the profit sharing committee. He has served the College in many ways, including as class president, enrollment interviewer, assistant class agent, officer in the Third Century Fund and Campaign for Dartmouth committees, and alumni sponsor for the Tucker Foundation. His family "all but has the place surrounded" with a '74 nephew, a '77 son, and two daughters an '84 and an '86.
