Greetings once more. Richard Neely has garnered accolades again from the legal and literary communities. He has just written another book, this one entitled Why Courts Don't Work, which is a distillation of everything (Richard has learned) about courts in the last 12 years as a judge. (Richard is a justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.) Besides writing books and articles for magazines, he is a professor of economics at the University of Charleston (in Charleston, W. Va.). He enjoys the mixture of the real world and academia. His letter reads as follows: "Academic people think about a lot of stuff but do nothing; practical people do everything but think about nothing. Judges, fortunately, get to think about many things and occasionally have an opportunity to do something!" This past March, Richard spent five weeks as a professor of law at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, teaching the Chinese the legal doctrine: Aquila non capit muscas (and) ignorantia Facti excusat, ignorantiajuris non excusat. When not so engaged, the judge spends his time gathering berries and nuts in the West Virginia mountains. (Seriously, thanks for the book, Richard, and thanks for your interest in my column.)

Oh, by the way, Richard was mentioned as a finalist in the Political Book Awards Competition for 1983. (There were 24 finalists, including Professor Frank Smallwood '51.)

Ed Stern writes that as vice president for continuing education of the Dartmouth Association of the Great Divide, he arranges seminars by Dartmouth professors for the association. Ed has recently opened his own law office for the practice of civil litigation in the Colorado courts. His wife Jeni is completing law school this year. Ergo bibamus. The Sterns have two children: Debbie, 11, and Daniel, eight, who are "schuss boomers" on the ski slopes. Ed extends an invitation to any classmates passing through Denver, Colo.

Nels Carman writes that he is operating a small retail travel agency in New York City (Travel Mates Inc., 212/221-6565) and was just recently married (on October 1, 1983) to Helen Lewis in Dedham, Mass. Attending Nels's wedding were '64s Joe Delcore and JohnIngham. Nels reports that Joe Delcore is in the general practice of law in Everett, Mass., and is married (wife, Barbara) with four children. John Ingham is a railroad executive in Greensburg, Pa., and is married (wife, Charlene) with two teenage kids. (Sorry, I cannot give you more details regarding these classmates.) Incidentally, Nels, Joe, and John are all members of Delta Kappa Epsilon and are planning a mini-reunion at the site of their fraternity house which tragically became a Wheelock Street parking lot.

Steve Tompson is planning a September marriage to Susan Von Hoffman of Montclair, N.J. Steve is a general investment manager with Pru Capital in Newark, N.J., a subsidiary of the Prudential Insurance Company. Susan is a regional director in the seminar division of the Institutional Investor, a monthly publication in New York.

Well, that's it for this season. 1 hope you all have a great summer and please write.
