Signs discouraging smoking are so common

nowadays that some adolescents in their forties or less - might think such signs are solely of modern vintage. These youngsters never knew that Twoters were always trendsetters, and the first such signs appeared on Dartmouth dormitory posters in September 1919. Published by "the mighty Sophomore Class of 1922," the signs listed some compassionate suggestions for the freshmen of 1923. Under the heading, "Freshman! Hear ye, Kings of Moisture, ye Gapping Gawks of '23, the Ail-Powerful Sophs command Thee," and among many other sympathetic hints appeared this gem: "Decorate not thy drooling lips with the filthy weed elsewhere than in thy dingy dugout, lest the wrath of thy peers be upon thee." The message concluded with the mild caution, "Beware of the Ail-Embracing Trough," a drinking spot for horses and a dunking spot for uderclassmen.

Obviously, some Twoters were beginning to major in English, which they found rewarding later on. Among them: Professor Ned Allen, the Reverend DickBeyer, Professor Syl Bingham, Professor George Brooks, Carroll Dwight, Bill Gallagher, Professor Phil Grove, Steve Kenyon, Professor Eaton Leith, Kip Orr, Professor Win Ranney, Judge Sterry Waterman, and Professor Herb West. If, as usual, the list omits someone, please protest, but don't ask for a refund on your Alumni Fund donation.

Naturally, the entire class and head agent Spenny Smith are jubilant over 1922's results for the 1985 Fund. And deservedly so, because the final tabulation shows '22 set a new 63-year-out amount, surpassing the previous record by $6,474. Thanks again, everybody.

The 1985 Alumni College featured "Myth, Heroic Legend, and the Challenge of Change." The sessions ran from August 4 to August 15, and "very enjoyable" was the report of the "students." "All the fun of the college without exams and the straining for grades."

The '22 family was represented by Dr. George Sackett from Stuart, Fla., for his fifth Alumni College, and by LouiseStearns from Tubac, Ariz. Bill Bullen arranged a very pleasant luncheon at the Dartmouth Outing Club House on Occom Pond for the Alumni College '22 visitors and the local '22 contingent. Those attending: Ray and Doris Atwood, Bill Bullen, Carroll and Nan Dwight, (and Peter Dwight '54), Stan Miner, Len and Margaret Morrissey, Louise Olsen, GeorgeSackett, and Louise Stearns. It was heart- warming to have such a group together once more.

And speaking of happy gatherings, may you and your family have a most enjoyable Thanksgiving.

Just as these notes were being typed, the sorrowful report came in that JimHamilton died on September 6.
