Sachem Field is as close as I got to the Alumni Magazine office on the deadline for this October issue. Edythe and I led a group of relatives and friends from our vacation retreat on Lake Sunapee to Sachem to see "The Big Apple Circus." Founded and ring-mastered by Paul Binder '63, the single-ring, European-style circus has become a summer tradition in the Hanover area. It is a great take if it makes it to your area.

The evening before the deadline, Billand Judy Breed cruised to our beach in Bill's new inboard with a load of other 's2s John and Judy North and Bob andLois Holmes. I jumped on for a beforedinner cruise, which included some views of Dave McLaughlin's and Rem Kinne's properties on the east side of the lake. Bill and Judy make the short trip from Hanover to New London for the summer months. It hardly makes a difference in Bill's daily commute to Ascutney to preside over his Johson & Dix fuel empire. Other '52s seen frequently in the lake area are Chuck and Alison Curtis, John andKay McCrillis, and Bill and MaggieMontgomery.

My daughter, Tracey '83, and I had dinner recently with Rog and HarrietSteinharter at their home in Harvard, Mass., and caught up with their family news. Sons Mike '81 and Andy, St. Lawrence '85, are working in the Big Apple. Rog toils at the Wellesley office of the Wyatt Company, Pete Zischke's alma mater.

I've had some contact with old Deke buddies Jack McNary and Bill Thornton. For many years Jack has been vice president of Bill's company, Manchester Sand and Gravel, in Manchester, Conn. Jack's wife, Winnie, died suddenly of a heart attack in May 1985. A year later, Jack joined me in Boston for a Celts-Rockets playoff, where I got caught up on Jack's family news (soon to be a grandpa) and an exciting safari trip to Kenya earlier in 1986. "Boss" Bill had heart bypass surgery last December and some hairy post-operation complications, all solved after a lengthy recuperation in Florida. The ordeal took Bill cdown to his old football-playing weight, and he looked wonderful. That's good news!

Mary Teevens also joined the first-time grandparent ranks recently. Oldest son, Buddy '79, and his wife, Kirsten, had their first, a daughter, in June. Buddy is swinging into his second year as head football coach at the University of Maine. My son, Jon, and I popped in on them during a tour of Maine colleges last spring, and they seem to love the Orono area.

Mention of Jon reminds me of seeing Steve Meterparel frequently last winter at Weston High School basketball games. Steven's daughter, Lynne, was the star of the girls varsity team and Jon plays on the boys squad.

Bill and Judy Breed's first grandchild, a boy, arrived recently via daughter Penny '79 and husband Dan Freyhofer '80. Grandson Bill made a cameo appearance at our reunion tent last June.

After many years in sales management positions with cosmetic firms and the last 20 with RKO General and RKO Radio, Howie Carter was named vice president/ sales manager, eastern region, of New York-based Radio P Records.

Another career change has taken BillHuey from the role of consultant to private and municipal golf courses to a position with Hay Career Consultants in San Francisco. Bill will be specializing in outplacement consulting, an increasingly important facet of the real business world in these days of corporate acquisitions and cutbacks. While none of us may want to avail ourselves of his professional services, Bill would welcome contact from classmates who get out to Baghdad by the Bay. Seems like Bill and Hugh Lefkowitz ought to explore a coast-to-coast connection in the search and placement field.

Other job and director news about classmates includes: Welch Foods, Inc., announced the promotion of JimWeidman, pictured here, to vice president, corporate communications. Standex International Corporation named Jack Wall as vice president, communications, where he will also continue as VP, industrial relations. BobWeinig has moved up to president and COO of Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates. Jack Collins has moved up to the role of president while keeping his position of COO at Clorox Company in Oakland, Calif. Phil Benton is the new executive vice president, international operations, of Ford Motor Company. Bob Jeck was recently named a vice president of Englehard Corporation. Bob was formerly president and CEO of an Englehard subsidiary. Pete McSpadden, president of an advertising agency in New York, is a new trustee of Bradford College. Alan Smith, executive VP and CFO of General Motors, was elected to the Board of Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company.

This edition will probably come out too late to remind you about the Navy football weekend in early October at Annapolis, but in time to. urge you to make the mini-reunion in Hanover for the October 18 Harvard game. Speaking of football reminds me of bumping into Jamie Myers'88, son of Don and Jan Myers, at a game last fall. Jamie looked fine despite the back injury he suffered in a 1984 freshman football game. He had to pass up football in 1985, but hoped to be back on the field this fall. Jamie is serving this year as president of Theta Delt.
