No news is not good news. At least, not for a class secretary, relatively new to the job, trying to get together some sprightly class notes a full month and a half before publication date. But that's the situation during this unusually cruel February deep freeze in New Hampshire, when what is claimed to be the world's tallest snowman towers over the Green to symbolize Dartmouth's 80th Winter Carnival and the wind chill factor hits new lows. April seems a long way off.

The Alumni Magazine's new editor, Jay Heinrichs, has sent a morale-boosting memo to "the best pool of alumni writers any editor could desire" (hah!) urging us all to beat the copy deadlines, and asking for suggestions on how to make these notes even better. Earlier came a memo from class notes editor Karen Endicott that mentioned some ways that have been used to gather news: sending out birthday cards, acknowledgements of which may yield interesting information; sending out detailed questionnaires; picking names at random and mentioning them in the column with a request for news; and as a last resort, writing up fictional nonactivities for individuals in the hope of a reponse about real activities. Before trying any of these, I earnestly beg for voluntary items, however trivial you may consider them. It would be wonderful to hear from you or from any family member or friend before the 15th of any given month!
