George Graham is making progress as chairman of the 45th class reunion in Hanover, June 13-15, 1988. That's just a little more than a year away.
He's persuaded Don Taylor, who lives in nearby Grantham, to be treasurer of the festivities, and George also has enlisted the help of Bodie Mosenthal and Dr. Bob Liming. George and Bob, incidentally, are enrolled in a senior fitness class that works out three times weekly in Leverone Field House.
George also reports he received a postcard from his former roommate Ed Ingraham, who with wife Sue was on a "vacation" trip in India. George said the trip "sounds more like 'punishment' to me." Ed was a U.S. foreign service officer in Southeast Asia for many years.
Had a delightful telephone conversation with Conrad Young, who retired April 1 as president and chief executive officer of United of Omaha, a subsidiary of Mutual of Omaha. Con reports he and wife Miv plan to divide their time between their home at Sun River, Ore., where he's a neighbor of Charlie Cusack, and Marco Island, Fla,. where they built a home seven years ago. Con will remain on the board of directors of both Mutual of Omaha and United of Omaha. Con and Miv plan to be in Hanover in mid-June.
Speaking of Marco Island, there was a mini-reunion of '43s at Martin (Killer)Kane's place there on March 10. The Kanes were hosts to John (Jug) and Phyl O'Connor, and Dick Kimmel and Binny Tower also were on hand. In the course of the evening they called Eddie O'Brien in Minot, Mass., just to convey felicitations.
A nice note from Neal Tyler, from whom we've heard too little over the years, discloses that he and wife Bimby have bought a place at Ocean Reef, near Key Largo, Fla., where they plan to spend future winters after they pass papers on the place in mid-May. Neal reports he has no present plans to retire as president of a Manchester, Conn., lumber company.
Nancy Elliot, our honorary class member who for many years was director of special alumni service at the College, spent a week in March with Margot and Frank Hartmann at Seabrook, S.C. Frank continues to tear up the golf turf as president of the U.S. Amateur Golf Association.
George Munroe, who retired February 1 as chairman and chief executive officer of Phelps Dodge, spent two weeks in Italy with wife Ellie the latter part of February and early part of March. Among other events, they attended a performing arts festival in Venice. George still is chairman of the Phelps Dodge finance committee and on the boards of at least six other major corporations. He finishes his term as a Dartmouth Trustee in June.
From Con Young, we get belated news that Bob Williams of Dartmouth track fame retired last year as a sales executive of Mutual of Omaha and has moved to Fort Myers, Fla.
