During 40 years at Norwalk (Conn.) High School, Eric C. "Rex" Malmquist was teacher, coach, and principal. In those years the school received national recognition for excellence. In honor of Rex some time after his retirement, the outdoor athletic facilities were nated Malmquist Field. In 1986 the city proposed taking part of the field for a parking lot. Many loyal high school alumni considered this as degrading the honor given to the retired principal. They organized, threatened legal action, and eventually the proposal was nullified. Later the alumni committee presented Rex with a framed design of Malmquist Field as it remains. Pleasant things can and do happen even as we age beyond the mid-eighties.
