As a rule, I like to open my column with an interesting and often humorous anecdote to set the tone for the remainder of my musings. Fortunately for you, I'm too tired to be either interesting or even mildly amusing. I spent the last four days in the Big Apple and as usual I have returned to Rhode Island virtually brain dead. But I did manage to see a few classmates who filled me in on some news of some other classmates, so let's get to it.
John and Cindy Funk, who have been married for an amazing six and a half years, are still residing in the city that never sleeps. John claims to be working hard but it didn't seem to affect his social calendar. While I was in the city, the Funks played host to Tom Shanahan, Chris Morrison '81, and Brian Cusack '81. Shanny and Spot expect to return the favor by hosting the Funks on the Cape this summer. John and Cindy also filled me in on more of the Kappa Sig connection, as you will soon find out.
Jeff and Mary Bechler and V.J. and Jennifer Dowling joined us for dinner one evening. All looked marvelous and really enjoyed their spinach tortellini. Jeff is doing his residency in New Jersey while Mary is at Wharton. Makes for a tough commute but they're making it work. V.J. reports that his golf game is not improving despite reducing his beverage consumption per round.
Kappa Sig had an alumni house meeting in Switzerland recently, and Jon Strawn,Mike Donoghue, Rob Carroll, and EricMiller all attended, managing to do a little skiing in between chugs. The foursome was actually an eightsome but the ink on my napkin has run, leaving me unable to identify their appropriate female companions.
Steve and Jennifer Stone are happy to announce the birth of their first child, a bouncing baby boy. I must say I was extremely flattered when I heared they named him Peter. He's a step ahead already. It is widely reported that Rand Stephens is alive and well and living in Houston. Randoo himself may have called in the report on his cellular phone. Excuuuuse me.
One final Sig Lodge note. It appears that the untouchable Rob Olsson has had his heart snatched by a Jersey girl. If rumors of his impending engagement are unfounded, I'm sure he knows where they started. Ols will be spending the next two years at Kellogg business school in Chicago.
Also hoping to be at Kellogg is Ed Frechette, although his first comment after taking the GMATs was "I didn't want to go to business school anyway." Ed and Ellen are expecting their second child and hope to be in their new house by the time this is printed. They were supposed to move in January.
Todd Markman has recently gone through a major career change, switching from commercial lending to real estate lending. What'd he do, switch pens or something? As of yet, Todd has been unable to reproduce himself and a nation breathes a sigh of relief.
Crashy Zacher was spotted at a party recently. Is she trying to shake her reputation for working too hard? Too soon to tell.
That's it for Weekend Update. If you'd like to take me out to dinner in order to fill me in on classmates, I'll happily accept the invitation. I'll have the veal with eggplant in a wine sauce and maybe sambuca with my chocolate mousse.
