If by now you haven't sent I your reservation for the Fall Weekend, by all means do so. The big event is earlier this year, in mid-October, which is usually a glorious time in Hanover with the fall leaves. It'll be a great gathering. Hope to see many of you there.
Al Quirk, who has spent thirty years in service for Dartmouth, has become Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Emeritus. He will continue to help Dartmouth raise the $4O million for undergraduate financial aid by working with the Office of Development. We are sure that after the many years of having to make decisions on aid and admissions he will welcome a change in duties.
It is unfortunate that by now the exhibit featuring Peter Michael Gish's paintings at The Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University is over. His subjects from seascapes to Kurds. The May 9 to July 25 exhibit honored Peter's retirement in June after 21 years at Fairfield, illustrated his adventurous life and brilliant work with water colors and oils, and included some work from the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Art Collection.
After leaving Dartmouth Peter gained an MFA from Yale. He continued his education in Paris, Madrid, and Austria, and in addition trained in the Marine Corps Reserves as a helicopter pilot. In 1967 he served for three months as a combat artist in Vietnam and retired from this to join the faculty at Fairfield.
Just recently at age 65, and now a colonel, he volunteered to return to active duty as a combat artist in the Persian Gulf War. He was sent to northern Iraq as part of the forces trying to save the Kurds. In this process he took thousands of photos, completed four notebooks of sketches and 37 paintings, and lost 20 pounds in the extreme heat. This certainly sounds like real dedication. I am sure we would all like to learn more about his experiences.
This month Leigh and I will be taking a two-week trip through the National Parks and will see many of you in Hanover in October.
