Scenes from Dartmouth Weekend: Driving our rented recreational vehicle up Route 117 and seeing the muted glow and billowing smoke of the traditional bonfire (now I remember how I learned the words to "As the Backs Go Tearing By") . . . pulling into the Thompson Arena parking lot and seeing cars already in place for tomorrow's tailgating ("park as close as you can to the bathrooms") ... warming our bodies and our hearts next to the shrinking flame ("and it will all be gone in the morning—but the ground will still be warm") :. .
Running into President Mike Donohue and his fiancee at the Inn's redecorated Ivy Grill ("now I have to go to the class officers meeting tomorrow") . . . what's SherriCarroll Oberg doing behind the bar at Theta Delt? ("She's working for a venture capital firm, I think") .. . where's the Bud label in Kappa Sig's basement? Where's the Kappa in Kappa Sig? ("it looks like people actually study in this room") .. . toasting marshmallows as the flames died down ... EBAs does deliver to Thompson ...
Showering in a parking lot amidst tailgaters is a truly remarkable experience ... Hanover on a sunny fall day may be the closest thing there is to Eden ... running into Mike Donahue at a tailgate party ("I guess I missed that class officers meeting) . .. seeing Washington lawyer Rob Carroll at the same tailgate party ... joining TomShanahan at my first football game in two years ("there's no way we're paying $l5, it's on ESPN") ... iced teas and the final, tearful minutes at 5 Olde ...
Beers and dice at Theta Delt with Chicagoan Ed Frechette ("DDB Needham's paying so I brought the wife along") .. . parking our mobile home on frat row ("at least we'll have a clean bathroom") ... discovering that Alpha Chi is now a dry town ("we could use a house alumni council") .. . dancing to music videos on the tiled floor of Webster Hall ("those chairs were so uncomfortable") ...
Waking to the sound of hunters' rifles and the peace of the river . . . filling up on the golf course ... lunching in a stalled RV on 89 south of Exit 10 ... sleeping in a real bed.
On to the news. My sincerest apologies to John Blum '54. He wrote to me a few months back to let me know that AlfredBlum, his son, had graduated from Tulane Med School in 1986 and while there had married the former Stacey Lee Dawson. Due to an oversight on my part, this information did not appear in this space. Fred is currently in his third year in residency at U.C. San Francisco ana is the proud father of Maxwell Arthur 2010.
It's been an up and down year for TedTrabue Jr. Back in 1988, Ted was knocked from his motorcycle by a Washington cabbie. After a brief hospital stay, Ted wrangled a fortuitous settlement and bought a house. Whether the two incidents are connected or not, I can't say. After seven years in D.C. government, Ted has become the newest associate at the Washington firm of Hamilton and Hamilton. He says he sees Richard Phipps and Ann Bailey Melanson quite often. Great, Ted. How are they?
Ken Cleveland's journalistic career has continued to skyrocket. After becoming the first full-time editor of the weekly West Boylston (Mass.) Banner, Ken has moved on to become news editor of the Marlboro Enterprise and Hudson Daily Sun. That's a lot of reading.
I'm running out of space here so stay tuned for the next issue, which will feature details on the weddings of Ray Murphy and Mike Fowler. No, not to each other.
