It's the wee hours of Sonday morning after Dartmouth Night weekend as I write, so forgive me if the details herein are a little fuzzy. Despite the out- come on the gridiron, a good time was inevitably had by all. The hot topic of conversation and universal awe was the '88 RV, piloted by our erstwhile class president, Dan Estabrook. He and his fellow RVers, unable to locate suitable hotel accommodations, came up with what many now recognize as the way to attend a Dartmouth party weekend: rent a 30-foot Winnebago, fill the fridge with food and beverage, and park it on Webster Avenue. Also seen filing in and out of the land yacht were ScottBertetti, Walter Mutter, Karen Dietz, and countless others. The Royal Guard of Luxembourg could've fit in this urban as- sault vehicle.
Also spotted on campus were a number of visitors from distant lands. Jon Bylin, in from California, whipped out of his coat pocket a $2,000 mini computer that his company, Poquet Computers, just developed. It's a full IBM PC, and it's about the size of a day-by-day calendar. Jon's rooming with Ted Ives, but I couldn't make out what Ted does for a living over the sounds of the band inside the nearby house. Such are the perils of gonzo class journalism.
Also spent quality time with Ed Sim, who's in his second year at Michigan Law School. Ed spent last summer working for a Dallas law firm and for a White House cabinet official's office. Can't remember which one, but I remember it was impressive. Jim Shields didn't have to travel far to see the bonfire (which did indeed burn this year) he's working as an admissions officer in McNutt.
Also saw several Boston-types, who are all very happy in their lines of work and study. Among them were Jeff Dion, GerryDeBiasi, Tom Dente, Jim Rooney (who made Law Review at B.C. Law), and RickRosania.
Buzza Moore has an interesting doublelife going; he's studying for his master's in English and coaching the pitchers on the baseball team at Wesleyan. Since baseball literature comprises most of the best of sports literature, it's a Natural mix —okay, horrendous pun.
Got a postcard from Rachel Dratch, which begins with this warning: "I am not in law school, med school, or business school, and I'm not engaged to be married." Fair enough. She is playing two roles in AMidsummer Night's Dream in a Chicago theater company, and she spent her summer playing in two shows at a children's theater in North Carolina. One of the shows was Pinocchio, and in that Rachel was "the fox, the owl, and a donkey." Rachel is living with Sonja Kuftinec, who is assisting the literary director at the Organic Theatre and who will also be assistant directing there. "Sonja is already working at a coffeehouse which caters to the arty subculture lots of people wearing black," Rachel said. Rachel also noted that Mara Rabinowitz worked cleaning up the oil spill left by the Exxon Valdez in Alaska this summer.
More news from the marriage front: Laura Busfield is now Laura Kregenow, owing to her September 2 marriage to David Kregenow. Gill Watt and KathieLambert followed suit exactly one week later, and Jeff Singdahlsen will be marrying his hometown honey sometime in December, according to Laura.
Also got a copy of the newspaper story about the wedding of Andrew Winslow to a high-school sweetheart just down the road in Manchester. I recall hearing about even more weddings over the homecoming weekend, but I don't recall much more than that, so keep sending along word. The toaster's in the mail.
Happy Holidays, even if you are in Margaritaville.
