The deadline for my previous column came too early for mini-reunion comments, but it's never too late to reminisce. Though we've lost 13 classmates since 1987, including several regulars, our numbers held up well. Forty-five made the October 14 meeting, equaling last year; 17 were wives, widows, and girl friends. The Saturday dinner attracted 71, four more than 1987. Also I caught MaggieFisk and Fred Watson at the football game, both looking fine.
We welcomed several newcomers: Eleanor Olmstead with Jim Mitchell, Jinney White with Lee Chilcote, and Nancy Hukill with Bill Fenton. I hope they liked us. In 1986 we welcomed Louise Thompson as a newcomer, and now she is Mrs. GeorgeGeiger. Our congratulations and best wishes. Other newcomers of a sort were Billand Kay Reinhart, who have attended official reunions but never a mini. And we were delighted to have a courageous DorisMcClory with us, despite her recent loss, and ours.
Vivian Cole and Celie French reappeared in fine shape after being missed last year. Also Les Godwin, who had been absent for several years. But what of the Woosters, who haven't been seen recently, though they visit Quechee in the fall? Other missing regulars were the Sturmans. Was their 50th anniversary too much?
Twelve attended Saturday's pregame lunch at the Bema: the Condons, Davises,Ellie French, Haffenreffers, Lows, DorisMcClory, John Tiedtke, and Marr. The weather was almost balmy.
Harrison Condon has heard from several dues-paying absentees: Scot Van-Derback reports his activities are "very much restricted" by rheumatoid arthritis, but "we octogenarians have to expect things like that." Art Olsen, with tickets and reservations in hand, found himself instead undergoing open-heart surgery for a mitral valve incompetence. He's doing fine and planning on next year. And George Geiger missed the mini because he was honeymooning in England. Some octogenarian!
Finally, pressures of the new house kept the Van Leers away. Through Wayne, WinStone reports that Charlie Widmayer was to be the third member of 1930 to receive the annual Central High School (D.C.) award as Alumnus of the Year. Both Wayne and Win have been so honored previously.
