Well, I've attended my first Class Officers Weekend, though when Ev Low recruited (shanghaied?) me for this job he Mssz said it wasn't necessary. I'm glad I did, as I came away with a very up-beat feeling about the College. In Milt McInnes's absence, I first intended to report the goings-on in this column. However, my first write-up exceeded 1,000 words, and the second effort barely got down to 450 absolutely indispensable words. So I goofed off ancl shipped it all to Milt, whose Thirtyteer, in any event, will beat this by a month.
Homeward bound, I wandered for two weeks, visiting family and two classmates. I spent two days with Hank and Gwen Odbert in their very pleasant retirement home in Pensacola. Hanlc has had some problems, like a heart attack three years ago, and some other continuing annoyances which limit their travels, but they both look fine and are happily and comfortably situated.
Several days later I had lunch and a pleasant afternoon with John and Flavia Marsh, both of whom seem to be doing very well. John presented me with a pre-1930 snapshot of himself, with my 1926-28 roommate, the late Bob Billings, and me, in front of the Hanover Inn, all dressed up for some long-forgotten occasion. Also a recent shot in which John was demonstrating that he could still get into his 1930 freshman baseball uniform complete with an umbrella for a bat.
Having just seen those two surviving Lakewood High classmates, last night I phoned the third survivor and talked to both Hub and Margaret Christman. They sounded young and spry, though Hub says the years have left a few marks. He uses a cane to relieve a back problem, and Margaret has a few reminders of her stroke, but they should both be around a while.
My travels were too early to include the Chilcote wedding festivities, but I do congratulate Ginny and Lee and wish them years of happiness, with annual returns to the fall reunions, at which we first had the pleasure of meeting Ginny.
