Several issues ago, Dick Fuglesang was incorrectly identified in a picture with Johannes von Trapp '63. But a recent picture of our intrepid Norseman, in Scandinavian Airlines' in-flight magazine, got it right. Dick heads up Ajungilak, an international manufacturer of bedding, quilts, and sleeping bags. A firm believer in internationalization, he has successfully exported the Ajungilak bedding product line to other countries by adapting to different societal selling points; in England, the "soft and caressing Scandinavian" approach is used, while Germans are more impressed with the company's long history of quality products. (No question in my mind .. . the soft caressing approach every time.) Dick is on the board of the Norwegian Export and a member of the Norwegian industries EEC working committee. At last report, Dick and his wife, Inger, live outside of Oslo.
Leaping from bed to bathroom, the Colgate-Palmolive Company has named BillShanahan to the newly established position of chief operating officer. Bill had been a senior executive vice president in charge of Colgate's international operations ana will now tuck the United States under his wing as well. This move, according to Colgate's chairman, is to "further unify Colgate's global marketing thrust, which has been a key element in the company's recent increase in profitability." Bill joined Colgate in 1965 and has served as Brazilian general manager, VP of marketing, and head of the Helena Rubinstein division.
Totally oblivious to the Fuglesang/Shanahan international movement afoot, our class president Gene Gasbarro has been busily making it in Rhode Island. Gene recently joined Eastland Bank of Woonsocket as VP of the commercial loan department. Gene had been VP and senior lending officer of Fleet National Bank from 1964 to 1981 and then headed up his own company, McGregor Manufacturing, for four years. Most recently, he has been national sales manager for Carlton Manufacturing in (you peeked) Rhode Island. Gene is president of the Dartmouth Club of R.I. and a director of Federal Hill House Association and Douglas Drug, Inc. He and his .wife, Sandy, are parents to three posttuition (or almost) offspring.
Back on our international theme, DavedeWilde has formed Chartwell Partners International, a San Francisco-based executive search firm. Dave had been the managing director of financial services for Boyden International Inc., one of the largest worldwide (including Rhode Island) consultants to management on executive selection. He, his wife, Katherine, and children Holland, 18, and Cruz, 16, live in the Bay Area.
Finally, on the Hanover homefront, JimVarnum has recently been mentioned in The Dartmouth (aka the "Daily D" to us more mature alumni). In addition to his duties as administrator at Mary Hitchcock, Jim is also corporation president of the Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternity. There is a move afoot to change Tri-Kap's name, due to KKK connections. Your condolences and/or new name suggestions may be welcomed (?) by Jim at this time.
