Leaving Ben Drew's memorial service with poignant memories of his friend, Pete Knight drove down to the Connecticut River "to check on student activity at the club, as Ben and I always did when I came to Hanover." There Pete determined to establish a fitting memorial "to honor Benjamin Warren Drew's long interest in and service to the Ledyard Canoe Club." Pete fired the enthusiasm of Ben's friends from various classes, especially ours. The Ben Drew Memorial Fund was established to aid the maintenance and expansion of club facilities. When Pete wrote me, over $30,000 had been raised or pledged, and Bud Titcomb '37 had donated his architectural skill to draw up plans for expanding the existing boat house. Among those "who have paddled on the river with Ben" and contributed to the project: Art Allen, MiltAlpert, Alex Christie, Dave Kirby, and Carl Ward. Work has started on a facility to provide more locker space and storage for canoes.

Ed Marks phoned the sad news of DickHazen's death. I asked if he had a newspaper obituary I could send the College. He kindly followed through, but in the meantime I realized I am not alone in reminding myself of my own mortality by reading death notices. Joe Boldt checked in with Dick's obit. So did Don Marcus. Then Mike Cardozo sent a moving memorial about Dick and other Phillips Academy friends who became Dartmouth '32s.

We hear too little about Charlie Doerr these days. Through A] Zinggeler however, whose daughter ran across a clipping in a San Diego newspaper, we learn that Charlie was named "Senior of the Year." His accomplishments have been many besides being treasurer and director of McKesson and Robbins. He was being honored as "a concerned and active citizen." A few of Charlie's offices and directorships: president of the board of education in Bronxville (before moving to California); president and director, San Diego Chamber of Commerce; trustee, Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation; trustee, Children's Hospital of San Diego; trustee, California Hospital Association. And today, Charlie is an "active resident" of The Cloisters in La Jolla.

Don and Ellie Marcus escaped the February chill with a Florida holiday. WarrenHalfamore went off to spend March in Bermuda. Who said our winters are getting shorter? Probably a skier.
