Mrs. Laura Lord Scales died on Tuesday, June 12, in Northampton. As reported in the '21 Smoker of May 1989 she was born in Hanover and the daughter of Dartmouth President Nathan Lord. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in 1901. Northampton Mayor Musante visited her on every Dirthday for the past ten years and at her 110th birthday party on November 13 gave her a vase with a single rose. After her passing he is reported to have said, "I am going to miss her. It's remarkable that a person with all those years could be as sharp and as interested in life and her surroundings."

Doris Campbell, a past president of Smith '21, does a fine job on our memorial gifts and also works as a cheerful and welcome volunteer in West Newton.

I hope to go to our 70 th Reunion next June. However, I shall plan to avoid the Commencement because I do not want to listen to a valedictory which might be similar to that of June 1990.
