One of our classmates will be among those honored at the two-day kick-off for Dartmouth's Will to Excel national capital campaign at J New York's Lincoln Center on November 15-16. Steve Bosworth will be among those alumni receiving the Presidential Medal for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership at a black tie affair at Avery Fisher Hall. As ambassador to the Philippines, he achieved eminence as a government leader.
Also being honored are leaders and thinkers in the arts, business, science, education, and the humanities, and winners of Nobel Prizes, (individual) Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Awards, Oscars, Tonys, and Emmys.
Art Kelton, our class president, received a letter from Bud Beatty, associate dean of residential life, again thanking us for our support of the Fayerweathers. "I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for the class of 1961's continued support of the Fayerweather cluster. I continue to hear from undergraduates who remark how much they love meeting with your classmates. It truly enriches their Dartmouth experience. I hope the members of your class also enjoy this special relationship."
Art has been talking at some length with Henry Eberhardt , our head agent, who needs some new volunteers to help out with the Alumni Fund. For one, Henry is looking for a classmate to head major gifts. Some of the chairmen of other portions of the drive have been doing the same thing for five or more years, and want to be relived. We need some new volunteers for agents as well.
Art said Henry claims to be adjusting well at his new job as vice president at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia—though national and cultural differences are real. A return visit to the United States put Henry and his family on Cape Cod for Hurricane Bob.
The class executive committee, which was scheduled to meet in Hanover on Dartmouth Night weekend (well after the deadline for this column), will meet again on the Friday after Thanksgiving in Washington, time and place to be determined. Want more info? Call Art at 303/476-2466.
Oscar Arslanian and a bunch of other '61s held their Third Annual Southern California '61 Soiree—that's Californian for mini-reunion—on Sunday, September 22. This is one model for the area/regional reunions that the class executive committee has said they would help support by using class funds to get the word out. Call Art if you want to organize an area or regional mini-reunion.

Not all the drug dealers are bad guys. TedMascott deserves a round of snaps for his recent appointment as vice president of business planning and administration for Merck & Cos. Inc., the world's largest pharmaceutical company. Ted will be coordinating strategic planning, profit planning, capital project review and business development as well as working with other corporate and divisional groups on diversification, acquisitions, licensing agreements and joint/new ventures. His most recent position was general manager of Merck's Consumer Healthcare Group which formed two joint ventures with Johnson & Johnson and established a new self-medication division for Merck. Not coincidentally Merck stock hit new highs in September. Ted and his wife, Mary, live in Fair Haven, N.J.
Somewhat closer to Hanover, John Schiffman was appointed partner in charge of Smith, Batchelder & Rugg's Lebanon, N.H., office. The firm is one of the largest regional accounting and consulting companies in northern New England. After Tuck School, John worked with Ernst & Ernst and the Henschel Shoe Company; he joined SBR in 1967 and was made partner in 1971. Our former Indian cheerleader lives with his wife, Jill, in Hanover. Another "coincidentally" ... John's appointment was made by Jay Pierson, SBR's executive committee chairman who, with Sue, votes in the Etna, N.H., town meetings.
At the black-tie Lincoln Center kick-off for Dartmouth's capital campaign on November 15-16, Nid Pibulsonggram and Paul Tsongas will be honored with the Inaugural Presidential Medal for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership. The affair marks the beginning of a major Dartmouth fund-raising campaign by recognizing those alumni who have excelled and by exploring the Great Issues facing the College in the 21st Century.
On a down note, Tom Boudreau died of a heart attack while playing tennis on August 4. Tom had been managing principal of William M. Mercer Inc., in Tampa, Fla., a human resources consulting firm. Tom leaves his wife, Nan, and five children; our '62 thoughts are with them at this time.
