We have just finished one of the best mini-reunions of all times. We had a great turnout, and Bob and Pauline Field are to be congratulated for making all the arrangements. Also thanks to the Hanover-area ladies for the lunch before the game, Koo and Mary Delany for the liquid refreshments, and cohosts Bob and Joan Ehringer and Don andConnie Reich for the brunch on Sunday.
Our class project (sponsoring the Wheelock Dorm Cluster) is a most rewarding undertaking. The three undergraduates that we met were terrific, and if this is a sample of the Dartmouth product, we have nothing to fear in Hanover.
Jim Adams' second letter mentioned a reunion with Dixie Daniels in Williamstown, Mass. Dixie is the one who first introduced Jim to his wife, Clarissa, which was a happy event. Jim passed the word on to my Shirley that they were meeting her Skidmore roommate Joyce Newton that afternoon. His trip proceeded on to Hanover, where Jim Wells,Larry Johnson, and Harry Gustafson were also staying at the Hanover Inn.
Bob Krumm, who is also a good correspondent, reports on a wonderful September weekend on Nantucket at the Charlie andBetty Webb compound. In attendance were Phil and Barbara Bowie, Bob and JanetKrumm, George and Whiz Lowden, Dickand BJ. Smith, and Smed and Allie Ward. Despite the professional casting of Phil Bowie and vigorous effort of others, the striped bass and blue fish population remained the same in the Adantic.
A very pleasant surprise from GeorgeShimizu, who brought us up to date on several things. George and wife Mary were sightseeing in Santa Fe, N.M., when they came across a sculpture by Bob Haozous (1989 Dartmouth artist in residence). Unfortunately, in order to get the entire sculpture into the snapshot, George and Mary appear pretty small, but since Eddie O does wonders with "words and pictures," we will let him enlarge the Shimizus. George also logs in with a wedding date of April 2, 1943, but Bud Kastand Angela still lead the pack and have already received the award. George is also playing golf three times a week and plans to be at our 50th.
Min Lambert '46 sent in a note about golfing with Bud Kast at the Newport Country Club in Vermont. The snapshot shows proud smiles on both, as they each made a birdie on hole #l7.
Our designated letter writers for the next month are Glen Behringer, Weston, Mass., Ed Bock, Syracuse, N.Y., Sam Bullock, Philadelphia, Penn., and Bill Burr, Louisville, Ky.
Fred Stockwell won our first greatgrandfather contest. It's time for another contest, so let's see who has been to the most reunions. If my math is correct, we have had nine, so let's hear from you high scorers. Include the number of mini-reunions you have attended, in case we have to break a tie.
I regret to report the death of John Krol on September 21 from a heart attack. During Dartmouth hockey glory years in the early forties, it was only fitting that the sport pages were filled with plaudits for the great attack work of '44s Riley, Harrison, and Rondeau. However, we in the class of '43 know that it was the rugged defense team of John Krol and Harry Gerber that kept the opponents score so puny that a D victory was inevitable.
